An ode to universitiesA Poem by Mitchell DeanWe all go to university for one reason or another; to chase a job we want, because our parents, or partners want us to choose a career. This poem comments on the reasons we choose higher education.A beautiful campus she is, full of brick both young and old Full of students she is, some meek, some bold Alone on a hill I sat, surrounded by empty rooms and full alike Feeling the warm sun on my face and a chill on my spine at the approaching loss of day. As the wifi fails, and the lecturers move from class to class. I still am not sure why i’m sitting out on the grass. Or maybe I do know why, maybe I don't want to admit it. As the last slither of daylight touches the courtyard a fleeting dream comes to mind. Dreams, fickle as they are do compel us to choose a life When we are forced from our flights of fancy on the edge of a knife One side; a path we have always wished for, the other a life of servitude Choose wisely they say, for one will end in happiness and the other in labour But as the final chill of shadow touches bones like death A carrion crow cries, and students go home to rest A beautiful campus she is, full of brick both young and old Always full of students she is, forever meek, forever bold © 2017 Mitchell Dean |
