Thief in the NightA Poem by Missy DawnQuietly I come, Like a thief in the. Little by little, I take, and I take. But you’ll never suspect, Until it’s almost too late. Forget your keys here. Leave your stove on there. Excuse me away, That’s what you’ll always say. Maybe you’re tired. Maybe you’re stressed. You had a long day. You only need some rest. You tell yourself this, So, you’ll have peace of mind. But deep down you know, nothing is fine. As you ignore me, I only take more. I’m growing you see, I’m not such a little problem anymore. You’ll yell at your husband, You’ll forget your son’s birthday, Call your daughter a liar. This is how you know, I’m spreading like wildfire. My hunger it grows, On your mind, I continue to feed. You refuse to acknowledge, the demon that is me. I’m stealing your joy Leave you feeling afraid and alone. Though you’re surrounded by people, Your mind is now my home. You do not cry out, You do not ask for a hand You’re letting me ravish you, Refusing all others, when they try to help. So, I grow, and I grow, Getting bigger and stronger, The ones who love you, fear soon you’ll know them no longer. They pray every night, feel terror and strife. All they want, is for you to put up a fight. But you can’t kill, what you don’t acknowledge, And until you do, I will only grow stronger. © 2018 Missy DawnAuthor's Note
