Freedom to Feel

Freedom to Feel

A Poem by Missy Lorraine
"

As a college student, I am sometimes prone to anxiety. This particular poem was written right before a big test I took a couple weeks ago to help ease the anxiety I was experiencing at the time.

"
My heart beats fast
like a drum
right out of my chest-
threatening
to burst free
of it's skeletal cage,
shattering
my trembling sternum-
Perhaps
injuring itself
in the mindless process.
But it does not
think
that far ahead-
"freedom"...
"freedom"...
is all it can see,
all it can feel,
or comprehend
in it's terrified
state.
"Freedom".

This is super rough, and kind of experimental, so don't be too harsh. But still be honest with your opinion of course.

Betrayal,
The very thing that sustains life,
Strays from reason.
My heart betrays me.

I told you no.
Harder you beat,
Incessantly struggling to rip free.
My heart betrays me.

You belong to me.
Why can't you see I know what's best?
Still you yearn for her.
My heart betrays me.

Beating hard, Breaking free.
Why won't you stay?
All the world has for you is pain.
My heart betrays me.

Freed.
Devoid of reason you thump on,
Giving no care for reason.
My heart betrays me.

The pain will resonate.
She will hurt you,
You will be back soon enough.
My heart betrays me.

A slave to passion.
My heart breaks again,
Though I told him he would.
My heart betrays me.

Stay close.
You won't break if I protect you,
Here you are safe.
My heart betrays me.
