The World Wind

The World Wind

A Poem by Miss Fedelm
"

I'm not sure what this means.

"
The World Wind
The world wind blows,
And patterns change,
And minds inspect the new regime,
But do not really see the now.
We see what's been,
And what could be,
But miss what's here today to see,
The things that do exist.
We find a past to fit today,
Subjective stories stored away,
In rows of bins within the mind,
Which hold the things our feelings find,
But rarely what was there.
And we don't see the future well,
We think we do, but time will tell,
That most predictions don't come true,
We tightly cling to those that do,
As this enables us to feel,
That we can see what comes.
We use remembered fantasy,
To form a view of what will be,
Extrapolate from what was not,
The fiction of our future lot,
And all the time refuse to see,
The present, which is real.

From a young age I've always known I have inferior powers of observation. Wanting to be a writer, I've tried to strengthen my powers of observation, but I'm still not that good. I love the way your poem is a friendly reprimand to those who think they have seen a situation in the correct way. Every situation can be seen in so many ways. I just love all the ways you bop us on the head for our assumptions! Being human sucks! *smile* fondly, Margie

Bravo, my dear! What a simply great, exquisitely observant statement on perception, bias, selective memory, our hopeless habits that keep us so blind--almost in perpetuity! Nearly flawless, in my opinion! I would suggest you take out the word "really" in the fourth line in order to preserve the metric finality you employ in the last line of each subsequent verse. It won't touch the meaning, I assure you. Then, in my humble opinion, it WILL be flawless.

I think, most of all, I loved this: "And minds inspect the new regime but do not really see the now." This brilliant use of the word "regime" sets up an ominous gravity which grabs the reader's attention and won't let go.

Oops! I just now read your comment at the top that you're not sure what this means. You must be a sleeping prophet, like Edgar Cayce. I know perfectly well what this means!
