A Poem by Sophie A. Carroll

What are you afraid of?

Could it be death?

You see it as the end,

where everything becomes 'nevermore'...

Or is it the so-called life

you've lived 'til now,

void of purpose and satisfaction,

drinking from a cup that remains

half empty?

Do you fear the thought of being lost?

Forgetting what is and becoming what was...

Or is it a fear of finding;

when you'd rather be without than

face the truth and consequence?

What scares you from religion?

Is it the looming shadow of

a god waiting to hurl you

into a sulfer pit of guilt and

eternal punishment?

Or do you dare not give up control,

refusing to humble yourself into

someone set apart from the world?

I fear being rejected for what I am,

which gives me the fear of unlocking my heart,

which uncovers the fear of being alone,

which inspires me now to face the fear,

for my desire to be is far greater...
