Fake

Fake

A Poem by Liz

Fake,
Tearing yourself away,
To make a new one.

A nip here,
A tuck there.
All your friends are doing it.

"Oh,
Darling,
You look
Beautiful!"

Beauty is as
Beauty does.
At what cost does it come?

Loosing your individuality,
Becoming like the rest of them.
Loosing your sense of self,
To gain a sense of confidence.

Being held up by
A nip here,
A tuck there,
Until that's all that's left of
You.

Author's Note

Liz
This was written for a contest. To be honest I have no idea what I'm doing! This is my first time writing an Ekphrasis, the first time even hearing of them really, so this is my stab in the dark. I don't know why I got that take from the picture, but it was the first thing that came to my mind, so I ran with it. It most likely doesn't fit at all, though.

It does fit. The nips and tucks, and the image seems to depict a face being stretched, and moulded and altered in many ways. Ultimately, the end result is a 'fake' face. You have described that really well in this poem. The rigid definition of 'beauty' in our society forces many people to do acts that make them lose their originality, make them lose themselves to the rigmarole of life. Very good job.

Loved the imagery of is poem. The photo actually compliments this piece. The nip tuc nature of humans right now only makes them not original. Originality is sometimes keeping what you already have. Great poem.
