Normal is DifferentA Chapter by MissKitten
Normal, an adjective. Standard, or regular pattern.
I sit in the back of class and watch my teacher, Mr.Simmons, write the word "normal" on the board and underline it profusely. He turns to face us. "Can any of you care to give me a definition?" he asks, and I watch a few brave hands appear in the air. None of which are mine. "Normal, of the regular or usual kind," a girl in the front row blurts out. "Correct, but I'm looking for something more, get out the dictionaries," he tells us before disappearing in the cupboard to go look for something. I sigh as I rummage through my cluttered backpack in search of the pocket dictionary they give everyone at the start of the year. I finally find normal after searching through the n category for quite some time. "The usual, average, or typical state or condition." Mr.Simmons returns and randomly points at the boy right next to me. "What was the definition you found, young man?" he asks him. "Normal," the kid says, hiding his head behind the dictionary, "The usual, average, or typical state or condition." The teacher smiles. He turns back to the board and writes "Normal is different." "Don't you see, class, that everyone has a different average? We don't all eat the same dinner or wear the same clothes or smile the same smile, everyone is different, everyone has their own normal, or average," He tells us with a crazed look on his smiling face. He was going to say more but got caught off by the bell for lunch, and all of the students rushing out to the quad of Fillmore Middle School. I stay behind and slowly pack my pencil, notebook, and dictionary into my backpack. I get up and walk out the door of the Language Arts classroom, smelling the hot, humid Florida air, ready for the day ahead of me. © 2013 MissKittenAuthor's Note
