“She was lying outside the house.” Maudie responded.

“Is she alive?”

“I think so. Her ear is completely blown off and she looks pretty banged up.” Maudie told Roxanne. They observed the fragile girl who was now starting to twitch a bit.

“I think she’s dying.” Roxanne responded, showing no emotion in her voice. “Take her bag, it could be useful.”

Maudie looked at Roxanne, aghast. She had never seen her Aunt with such an unreadable expression on her face before. Maudie had never seen a dead human being in real life before Abe. She felt guilty for thinking it would be better if Evangeline were dead. She looked to her and then back to her Aunt, unsure. Roxanne gestured for her to continue.
Maudie kneeled over Evangeline and looked at her youthful face with sympathy. She was only 16. She reached over Evangeline and grabbed her bage purse.

“Lets go.” Maudie said, trying to keep her emotions in tact. They walked away from the girl in the flowery dress, heading to the dark SUV her Aunt owned.

“Maudie?” A quiet, shaky voice peeped behind them. Roxanne bit her lip, hoping Maudie would just turn back and keep walking. No such luck.

“Evangeline?” Maudie said, turning. Evangeline was already on her feet, looking at her, confused.

“Where are you going?” Evangeline asked, her voice quiet and scratchy.

“No where!” Maudie quickly said. She didn’t want to tell the girl that she was about to leave her to die.  Evangeline wasn’t convinced.

“Please, take me with you!” Evangeline said, growing panicked. Roxanne looked at her apathetically.

“Sorry, but no. Come on Maudie.”

“Wait, maybe she could help us. She’s from Right America.” Maudie suggested. She felt for the younger bloody girl in the flowery dress. Evangeline was shaking and trying not to cry.

“I’ll tell you anything you want to know.” She said.

The three ladies sat in the dark SUV. Roxanne drove, but Maudie didn’t know where she was headed.

“Why are you here… and how did you get here?” Roxanne spoke fastly and curtly.

“I was here for a class trip. It was to remind us that we should not rebel.” Evangeline responded.

This would be a great reminder. Left America was always 150 degrees, while Right America was 100. Carl E. Sudden felt that people didn’t deserve to be comfortable outside. Left America was a poor and lonely and dirty territory

“I really liked it here. I kind of agree with you guys. So me and my boyfriend Liam stayed after the class left, just to see what it was like without Suddeners watching our every move.”

Maudie felt the corners of her full lips twitch upward. It sounded like something she herself would do.

“I was just exploring and Liam was in a hotel. I was wearing this special armor around myself that was Liam’s as an added safety measure. All of the sudden…” Evangeline trailed off as tears crept out from under her puffy eyelids.

“It’ll be okay Evangeline.” Maudie said in a deep voice. She hated the inconvenience of how long Evangeline’s name was. “Angie.” She added.

“Did you just call me Angie?” Evangeline asked through her tears.

“Yeah.”

“Liam called me Angie!” Evangeline sobbed. “Can you drive to my hotel?”

Maudie looked to Roxanne asking her to accept Evangeline’s request.

Roxanne snarled and asked where the hotel was.

“I’ll go in and try to find him, you should try to rest.” Maudie told Evangeline.

“He has light brown hair and green eyes!” Evangeline shouted at Maudie as she walked up to the hotel. “We were on the 5th floor in room 515!”

Maudie walked into the hotel and saw the many dead bodies of bellboys and random people. She cringed looking at their pale gray skin. Maudie walked up to the 5th floor and burst into Evangeline’s room, kicking down the door.

“Hello?” She said carefully. “Liam?”

She looked around for a while and found nothing. Then she moved to the bathroom and saw a boy lying on the ground. The pole that once was used to hold up a shower curtain now asphyxiated the boy, piercing his lungs. The boy was tall and lean, with light brown hair and green eyes. It had to be Liam.

“Well, was he okay?” Evangeline asked eagerly as Maudie walks back into the car.

“He wasn’t there… and there wasn’t any blood in the room. I think he escaped, Evangeline!” Maudie lied. She lied right through her teeth and she wasn’t proud, but she couldn’t have the girl sobbing and useless.

“Really?” Evangeline said, excited. She was overcome with happiness and joy because what she believed to be the love of her love could possibly be alive. She fell asleep with a smile on her face in the dark SUV as Roxanne quietly drove in the direction of Right America and Maudie stared out the window, observing what her world had come to; the color gray.
