A Chapter by Isabella Ballman

All over MacSaints street, complete and udder destruction was evident. The once enchantingly green grass that stuck up like little spikes now sat flat on their sides. Their color had turned to gray. That’s how the Suddeners wanted it. Everything that man once enjoyed was now to be decolored, and depressedified.

Old billboards advertising random s**t like McDonalds had fallen down. If you looked closely enough at one, you might find a swollen, colorless, lifeless body, crushed underneath it.

Once bright houses would now all be painted gray, and do to the destruction, that paint would most likely be all the chipped off.

Maudie coughed into the sleeve of her fitted, fashionable, black army jacket. She could feel Abe Saxton’s blood seeping through the thin cotton of her white tank top, and tainting the skin on her stomach.

Maudie’s hair was volumptionous, long, and black. It hung down in waves on her head. She had long legs and an hourglass figure. Men fell head over heals for her, until they learned her personality. She was… a little bit of a ball buster and a bit of a feminist. Abe Sexton saw past her cold front, and they fell in love. But Abe Sexton was dead now. Maudie was a tough 24 year old woman, head strong but wise beyond her years. And now, Maudie was gray.

It all started in the summer. Inventor Carl E. Sudden was being praised all around the world for his new invention, the colornator. It allowed him to, with a gun, shoot a color onto something, like for example a shelf. After he shot the shelf, every single inch of it would turn to the color he chose. Carl E. Sudden became a hero. This had to be the greatest invention in thousands of years!

Carl soon got cocky. Many people started to think of him as some sort of a God. Sure enough, as any man would, Carl started to believe it himself. Now being a public figure, Carl began to do speeches. He told the world that we needed to protect the colornator, and that it should only be used for special things. But the world didn’t agree- not at first. People were irresponsible. They colored important things different colors. So the colornator was taken out of stores. The people of the world protested everywhere. They wanted their colors back. But a select group of people worshiped Carl, and completely agreed the decision. Maudie was one of them- at first. Lots of people were, actually. A group of people became extreme supporters. These people were called the Suddeners. Carl was mad and he wanted to punish the world for their insolence. So him and the Suddeners, they invented the de-colornator. Maudie stopped agreeing.

This new device turned everything gray. Gray was the worse color Carl could think of. It was boring and depressing. Him and the Suddeners dropped gray bombs everywhere in the world. This would make everything and everyone outside gray. Once a person would go outside even after the gray bomb hit, the chemicals would turn their skin gray. Unfortunately for Carl, he made a bit of a mistake. The bomb turned skin gray, but not hair or eye color. Maudie’s eyes were a piercing blue color, and she was happy that she still had them. Even though she did loose her ivory complexion. The affect on most people was a good one Carl thought. Most people were too scared of Carl to fight. But not everyone. Rebel groups formed. People were pissed that their skin was now gray. Maudie and Abe joined the rebels. Soon the world divided into two groups. Rebels, and the other people. They quite literally divided into two different places. Maudie lived on the rebel side of the world along with Abe. They occasionally had meetings about taking down Carl and the Suddeners.

Don’t get me wrong. Not everyone on the non-rebel side was a Suddener.

One day, the Suddeners decided to attacked. They bombed the whole left side of the world, killing almost everybody. Maudie was not included in the murderer. She was in a special tunnel that the rebels created to get around in safety. No one expected it, so not many people were done there at the time. Maudie knew that there had to be other people still alive, but she didn’t know where to find them. After hearing the explosion, Maudie ran up stairs to find Abe lying on the ground.

“Abe!” Maudie screamed. She wanted to cry with all of her mite, but she knew she couldn’t. She had to stay calm. She ran up to him, lifted up his head and put it in her lap.

“Maudie, I love you.” He told her. He lifted a weak hand and brushed some of her hair out of her face.

“I love you too Abe. You’re going to be okay Abe. We’re going to get you some help Abe.” She said, looking into his kind brown eyes. She couldn’t stop saying Abe.

“Maudie, baby, I don’t want you to forget about me. But please darling, don’t dwell.” He says. He started to cough up blood onto her shirt. She stroked his face. No longer could Maudie talk. For if she talked, she would just burst out in tears. She just held him until he died in her arms. After he was gone, Maudie kissed him on the cheek, and walked out of the house. She then proceeded to scream as loud as she possibly could.
