Chapter 1

"

Chapter 1 is letting you get to know Haley, Tom, and *ewh* Brittany.

"

“Haley! Come see your new room!” Tom Ross, father of Haley Ross, called.

When Haley walked into the room, she couldn’t help but squeal with excitement.”It’s perfect, dad!”

“So, she likes it?” Tom asked.

“Of course, daddy!” Haley exclaimed as she was pulled in for a tight hug.

Brittany, Haley’s step-mother then pulled Tom in for a hug.

“Ugh!” Haley exclaimed, slamming the door in the couples face, and walking over to her new desk.

She didn’t mean to be impolite, but Brittany always had ruined the special moments she and her father shared together, like now for instance. Haley knew how happy Brittany had made Tom, so she never complained, not once. But she tried to send signals, like slamming the door, when Brittany was annoying her. Apparently, these signals weren’t working.

Haley looked around at her new room. It’s walls were a light lime green color. The bed was same color, but darker. There was a nightstand with a white finish standing near her bed, a white mirror that reached from a few feet below the ceiling to a few feet above the ground on the left wall, a white desk, and a white chest at the end of her bed (for clothes?).

Haley walked over to the mirror and stared at her reflection. She had dark brown hair that reached to the middle of her back, unlike her mother who had a blonde bob. And unlike her father, she had deep blue eyes. She had a tan complexion, which almost every girl at school was jealous of. Haley was in grade 6, but only 4’11 and weighed 79 lbs. When her mother was still alive she had always tried to make Haley heavier, saying that she should weigh in the 90’s.

A minute or two later, there was a knock on the door.

“Come in!” Haley called.

The door opened and there appeared Tom.

“I think you should start getting out more. I..I know this our first day at this house, but back in New York, you were always cooped up in the house, watching TV…that’s sort of why we only have a television in our bedroom.”

“Okay.”

“So, I want you to go outside and explore the new area!”

Haley sighed, “Alright. But just for you, daddy,”

“Thank you, Haley.”

Haley changed into a pair of jeans, an I LOVE NEW YORK T-shirt, and her sneakers.
She hurried to the front door so she could go “explore”.

First, she looked around to see where she would go first. The first time Haley looked, all she saw was grass. But the second time her blue eyes wandered around, she found the most amazing starting point ever- the woods resting about half a mile away. Not knowing if her father would approve of being that far away, Haley ran into the stone-only house.

“Dad, am I allowed to go to the woods over there?” Haley asked, pointing out the window that just so happened to face the woods.

“Oh, I guess so. But I’ll be watching you, alright?” He replied.

Haley nodded and ran back outside towards the massive area of nothing but trees.

As Haley began the half-mile journey, she felt as if she wasn’t alone. As if someone was watching her. But then Haley realized it was probably just the feeling of her father watching.

Though Haley enjoyed being with people and not being alone, she enjoyed the peace and quietness of the open area. It gave her time to think without having someone interrupt. Back at home- or what used to be her home- it was always busy. Haley and her father had lived in a condo in New York City, unlike the 6 acre property in Utah, which she now lived in.

When she entered, she thought it’d be best to make a path in the dirt so she’d be able to get home.  About 10 minutes into the hike, Haley thought about turning around and going back. That is, until she heard a voice. The voice sounded more like a males, but Haley couldn’t be sure.

The young girl stopped, frozen in fear, trying to hear what the voice was saying.

Finally, she could make out the sounds to know it was calling, “Who goes there?” as if it was some kind of security guard standing in front of a palace.

Not knowing whether to run or to find who the person was, Haley hid behind a tree, hoping whoever was yelling at her would stop.
