The Final Swim

The Final Swim

A Poem by Miss Eve
"

Reaching a goal is the biggest accomplishment there is.

"

As I swim towards the boat,

my heart rate increases.

With no past, no future,

everything around me is frozen.

Like a movie in wait to start again.

This is it.

This is the day I conquer the water.

The day I accomplish my goal.

If only I had a witness.

As I think I’ve got it, this time, the burning begins.

My sides ache, my legs are begging me to quit.

I begin to lose hope.

I’m just about to stop when I hear that musical voice.

“You can do it! Don’t give up!”

It’s my brother! He came!

I find my energy once more.

If I were to stop now,

I would be submitting to failure.

I decide not to look forward,

instead, I concentrate on my strokes.

It feels like forever when I hear my brother’s voice.

I turn around and continue my swim.

“You’re right there! Turn around!”

I do.

There it is!

I can’t believe how close it is!

After all these years of failing.

I’m finally going to reach that boat!

Just a couple more strokes...

Smack!

I slam my hand onto the boat.
