The End

A Chapter by Marcy Chavez

Nerissa slowly started to move her head and she opened her eyes. She felt tired and confused, she didn’t remember what had happened, but she felt some pain in the left side of her chest. She looked around her and saw Jerome and her mother there, but she still didn’t know why they were there.

Tess stood up and got closer to her holding her hand.

“Hello honey” She said, smiling and crying at the same time, she was so happy to see her awake again and to know that she was out of danger.

“Mom, what happened?” She asked her with her weak voice.

“You…were in a car accident honey” She told her.

Nerissa felt really confused, she couldn’t remember anything about it.

“Who else was with me?” She asked.

“Devin was driving” Tess told her.

It was then when she started to remember what had happened. She covered her mouth with her hands and looked at her mother.

“My baby! Mom! “ She shouted a bit.

“The baby will be ok honey and you too” She said holding her hand.

“How is Devin?” Nerissa asked.

“He is alive, but he will go to jail after he recovers from his injuries. I can’t believe what he did to Hazel and you” Tess said as she kissed her hair.

“Mom?” Nerissa suddenly said holding her mother’s hand.

“Yes honey?” She replied.

“I need to tell Robert about the baby” She said.

Tess looked down and closed her eyes. She felt heartbroken for what she was about to tell her daughter. She looked at Jerome and sighed. Jerome just closed his eyes and held his hands together trying not to cry in front of Nerissa.

“Mom, why are you giving me that look?” Nerissa asked.

Tess looked at her with tears starting to fill her eyes.

“Mom, why are you crying?” Nerissa asked.

“Honey, you were really injured in the accident and you almost died. They did a heart transplant on you in order to save your life” She said with her voice breaking.

“A heart transplant? But, how? I mean how long I have been here, that usually takes too long” She said.

“I know honey, but you were so lucky to find a donor” She said with her voice breaking even more.

Nerissa looked at her and then looked at Jerome and she knew they were trying to hide something from her.

“Mom? What’s happening, how you found the donor?” she asked.

Tess took a deep breath and held her hand tighter.

“Robert, he really loved you so much…” She said before breaking out to tears.

Nerissa shook her head and started to cry too.

“No! Mom, please tell me it’s not true!” She whispered crying and covering her mouth.

But Tess couldn’t even look her in the eyes, so Nerissa looked at Jerome and he nodded to tell her that what her mother was saying was true. Robert had taken his own life in order to save hers and their baby.

Nerissa cried really hard and she felt anger and impotence. The doctor came in to calm her down, after all the least she needed was to get exalted. She needed to be as calm as possible to have a speedy recovery. But the pain she felt inside her was just too much to take all at once, she refused to believe what Robert had done, and she refused to accept the fact that she won’t ever see him again, that she will never get to tell him about the baby, she never get to kiss his and feel his lips again, she never get to hug him and tell him that she loved him, once more. Now all she wished is to be dead just like him, she felt selfish having his heart inside her. As she cried she touched the surgery scar on her chest, something that will forever remind her about Robert.

The doctor asked Tess and Jerome to wait outside while they tried to calm her down with sedatives, until she fell asleep.

Jerome and Tess were hugging and crying outside in the waiting room. Tess felt so bad about all the bad things she had said about Robert and how she had misjudge him before even get to know him.

After Nerissa was finally calm, Tess went back to the room. Nerissa’s look was lost just looking at the window, to that grey sky. Tess came inside with a little box on her hands.

Nerissa looked at her without saying anything.

“Jason, brought this and he asked me to give it to you” She said putting the box on her bed.

“I don’t wanna live mom” She said.

“Honey, don’t say that. You need to make what he done worth it, it was his will and we can’t change that” She replied.

Nerissa looked back to the window.

“You wanna talk?” Tess asked.

“I’m fine mom, I just need to be alone for a moment please” She said.

Tess kissed her head and walked out.

Once alone, she opened the box and found inside a stethoscope with a note stick to it, and an envelope. The note read: “Read the letter before using this”.

She took it and wiped out her tears. She opened the envelope and took out the letter.

“I’m pretty sure that you will be mad at me for what I did, but It’s ok, you can be upset all you want as long as you are alive and take care of our baby. Yes I know about the baby, how? Well I promised you I was gonna take care of you and I did until the end of my life. Please don’t feel guilty, I want you to be happy and live your life to the fullest, to live it for me for our baby, for you. When they told me you were going to die if you didn’t find a donor, I knew what I had to do, I never doubt it for a second. I didn’t get the courage to tell anybody, so I just made them believe that I was going to be ok, and that I had a solution. My mom, my sister, my friends, even my father. I know they will be really hurt when they find out, but I think eventually they will understand my reasons. I can die in peace and happy to know that you and the baby will live, and that makes me a good father and “husband?”. Well anyway, I once gave you a ring with these words: “My heart is yours”, and I have fulfilled that promise to you. Nerissa I love you so much and loved you until my last breath. I would have done anything for another minute with you, but now I will be with you forever, not in the way I imagined, but in a better way, giving you life. Please don’t try to find out how I took my life, you must never ask anyone. The important thing is that you will be ok. In all my life I came to realize about one thing, and that thing is, that I could be happy and live a normal life without my father being there, but I did realize that I couldn’t live without my mom, she always supported me and was there whenever I needed her. That’s why I don’t want you to worry so much about me not being there anymore, our son or daughter, will do just fine without me, but could never be ok without you. I hope you understand. I feel like it’s impossible to finish this letter, there are just so many things I wanna tell you. The sky above me is so beautiful as I’m writing this letter and believe it or not, looking at it, gives me an incredible inner peace, so when you look up at the stars in a perfect dark sky, I want you to think of me and about all the especial moments we shared……I love you so much…..”

Nerissa finished reading the letter and she couldn’t stop crying. Then she carefully took the stethoscope out and read another note.

“I once promised you I was gonna take care of you and I did. I promised you I was going to give you the best I could offer to you, and I found that the best I could offer you was this heart you needed more than me. The stethoscope is for you to hear my heart beating inside you, and when you do I want you to close your eyes and imagine the first time we met, that same heart you will be listening to, is the heart that went crazy as I saw you, that went crazy the first time I touched your hand, the first time we kissed, that time when we made love, this heart was just crazy about you and now it will always be. A heart that throbbed million times but never like it did when you came into my life. The best I could ever give you is my million heartbeats, and the million more it will beat inside you. Love forever and always, Robert.”

Nerissa took the stethoscope and slowly put it on her hears and heart and closed her eyes.

As she heard those heartbeats coming from inside her, she remembered all the moments she had spent with Robert and the tears were just rolling down her eyes, she knew that it was gonna take all the strength in the world to go on with her life, but she knew that she could do it, because after all, it was what Robert wanted.

When the time finally came, she gave birth to a healthy baby boy, whom of course she named Robert. She was so happy to have him in her life. Every day she would look at her scar and remember about the guy she had loved and that had loved her so much. Even no one ever knew what had happened to Robert’s body, she had a grave with his name on it at the cemetery, a place where she could visit and take some flowers, somewhere she could take her son in the future to tell him about his dad and how much he had loved him.
