A promise fulfilled

A promise fulfilled

A Chapter by Marcy Chavez

The next morning, Robert took Claudinne to her favorite park and as they were both walking and enjoying the beautiful landscape around them, he bought her an ice cream cone. She felt so happy but she also felt like there was something especial her brother wanted to tell her, she could just perceive it in his eyes.

“Is everything all right Robert?” She asked

Robert smiled at her and then they both seated on a bench. She looked at her sweet eyes and took a deep breathe.

“Listen Claudine, this is not easy for me to say but..”

As he said that phrase, Claudinne changed her happy face to a confused one.

“What is it?” She asked.

“I’m leaving this afternoon”

“Leaving? Where?” She asked him because she still didn’t understand.

“To Spokane, I need to be there” He said.

“Why?”

“Nerissa needs me”

She hugged him and started to cry a little.

“But I need you too, you are my brother!” She shouted a bit.

Robert’s heart broke when he saw her crying that way and throwing her cone to the ground to hug him tighter.

“I know princess and you are the most important person for me and I will always love you like I can’t love anyone else but I promise you that we will be together again soon” He said.

She kept crying while hugging him, she refused to let him go.

“I love you too Robert” She told him with her sweet voice breaking.

Robert looked at her and smiled sadly.

“You have to promise me that while I’m gone you will take care of our mother and you will pray that we can be together again soon ok?” He asked her.

She just smiled and nodded.

“Everything will be ok princess I promise you” He told her kissing her hair.

After he had packed everything, he looked at his room once more and left his guitar on his bed. Then he went downstairs to say good bye to his mother.

Caroline knew what was about to happen when she heard his footsteps getting closer. She slowly turned around and looked at him, crying and smiling at the same time.

Robert didn’t say a word and he just slowly walked towards her and hugged her really tight.

“I love you so much mom” He told her kissing her hair.

“Please promise me you will stay in contact with us every day” She told him.

“I will mom” He said smiling.

“I love so much Robert, please take care ok?” She told him.

“I will mom, and you can be sure I will be very happy once I’m with Nerissa” He said smiling a bit.

Then he slowly walked out to his car without daring to look back. He never thought that someday he was gonna feel so much nostalgia and sadness as he was feeling it that moment. After being ready he finally drove off, leaving his mother and sister behind not knowing how long it was gonna take until he saw them again.

On his way to the airport he stopped at Simon’s house and had a brief conversation with him.

“If you are gonna be happy this way, then I support you buddy” Simon told him after he had tell him he was leaving that afternoon.

Then Robert handed him two envelopes.

“What is this?” Simon asked confused.

“Give them to my father when he gets back that will be in three days, no one else can open it ok?”

“Sure man, you can count on it” Simon told him.

“Thanks Simon, you are the greatest dude ever” Robert told him hugging him.

“Take care man, and call me when you get there ok?”

“Sure, I will” He said.

Then he went back to his car and drove off.

All kinds of thoughts were on his mind as he was driving, but it was Nerissa who worried him the most, he just knew that there had to be a way to find that donor she needed so much, after all, it was the lives of the girl he loved and his baby. He noticed the beautiful sunset of that afternoon and stopped his car to the side of the road to contemplate it better. He smiled, knowing that soon everything was gonna be all right.

The next afternoon, Tess felt really tired of waiting by her daughters side that her son, Jerome came to visit and he asked her to leave and rest for a while and that he was gonna take care of Nerissa while she was gone, Tess didn’t accept at the beginning, but finally she did.

Jerome couldn’t believe what had happened to his sister, and seeing her just lying on that bed, all pale and with her eyes closed, connected to all those machines, and knowing that she was expecting a baby, just broke his heart like never before, he even wished he could be on her place. After a few hours, Jerome went outside to the waiting room and he fall asleep there. They knew that they were running out of time to find a donor and save her life, as they had only one more day left.

After sleeping so deeply all night, Tess rushed back to the hospital that morning and when she got to Nerissa’s room, the bed was empty and she started to cry, fearing to hear the worst. She asked the nurse and she told him that they had moved Nerissa to the post-surgery room.

“What?” Tess asked very confused.

“You daughter was intervened last night, she found a donor and the heart has been succefully transplanted and she is out of risk now” the nurse told Tess as she smiled.

But Tess just didn’t know how that had been possible. She walked to the room where she was now and when she walked in, Nerissa was still sleeping but she looked a lot better. She looked at Jerome and shrugged her shoulders.

Jerome stood up and hugged her.

“She found a donor mom, it’s a miracle!” He said.

“Oh thank God! but… how?” She asked.

“Well, here it explains everything mom” He said as he handed her a letter.

As she read it, she couldn’t believe that Robert had found a donor so fast, and all to save his daughter’s and their baby’s life. The tears started to come out of her eyes and she covered her mouth with one hand. She was now sure that he really loved her daughter, and that he was a good person.

She looked at Jerome when she finished reading it and hugged him.

“He really loves her mom” He said.

“Is he here? I wanna thank him, I wanna talk to him” Tess said to Jerome as she wiped out her tears.

But suddenly his face fell and he looked down.

“Jerome? What’s wrong?” Tess asked holding his shoulders.

“He did mom” He said with his voice breaking.

“He did? What are you trying to say?” Tess asked confused.

“Robert is the donor” He replied covering his face with his hands and starting to cry.

Tess covered his mouth with both hands in disbelief and started to cry more shaking her head.

“No, that can’t be true!” She said.

Jerome sat down and kept crying. Neither of them could believe it, what Robert had done for Nerissa and the baby was just incredible and and act of pure love. But what worried Tess more now, was the moment when she had to tell that to Nerissa once she woke up.
