FarewellsA Chapter by Marcy ChavezWhen Tess arrived at the hospital they didn’t let
her see Nerissa because she was being treated in intensive care. Tess felt very
scared and she just couldn’t stop crying as she seated in the waiting room,
praying that her daughter will be ok. Hazel had been taken to that hospital as well but
her condition was stable. Back in England Robert was just waking up and he
didn’t know why but he felt anxiety and restlessness. Anyhow he got up from bed
and went downstairs to have breakfast as usual, he took it that those strange
feelings were normal and due to how nervous he felt about flying back to
Spokane to be with Nerissa and his baby. Taking advantage that James was not home walked to
Robert and gave him a sealed envelope. “Here, this is for you” She told him. Robert frowned because he didn’t understand what
was all about. “What is this mom?” He asked her. “It’s the money you will need for the flight
tickets and to rent an apartment for a few months in Spokane” She replied
smiling. Robert didn’t know what to say, he felt so happy
like he had never been before in his life, he couldn’t find the words he wanted
to tell her. So he simply smiled, stood up and hugged her. “Thank you very much mom, I love you” He said,
almost crying. “You’re welcome, I’m so happy for you because I
know that with this money you will be happy again and forever” She told him
smiling and crying a little. “I need to get those tickets as soon as possible,
before my dad finds out” He said. “Yeah, but shouldn’t you call Nerissa first?” She
said. “No, I wanna surprise her, I want her to see how
much I really love her” He said. “That’s good honey” She replied. Back in Spokane, Jason had heard about Nerissa’s
accident and he went to see her at the hospital. When he gets there he asked at
the reception where they told him in what floor she was and in what room as
well. He walked up there, and when he got there he heard the nurses talking to
Tess and giving her the most terrible news she could hear. “I’m so sorry but your daughter was injured really
bad, in fact, she will need a heart transplant to continue living” “A heart transplant? And what can I do?” Tess asked between sobs. “There’s really nothing we can do, the waiting
list is too long and is almost impossible most of the time, I’m so sorry” Her world had just gone down as she understood
that Nerissa was going to die. Jason heard that too and he was crying as well,
he didn’t know what to think or how to tell that to Robert, but he knew he had
to. So he slowly walked out of the hospital and once he was outside he was
about to dial Robert’s number when he called him first. Jason picked up trying to hide the sadness in his
voice. “Hey Robert” He said. “Hello buddy! How are you?” Robert greeted him
happily. “Well, I’m…ok” Jason replied. “Listen I have some very good news, you won’t even
believe it” “What is it?” “I’m going back to Spokane and I will surprise
Nerissa” He said. Jason closed his eyes and took” a deep breath. “That’s good Robert, but listen there’s something I
need to tell you first” “Oh, what is it?” Jason felt all his body shaking as he just couldn’t
dare to tell him what had happened, he just didn’t know how. “There’s been an accident” He said. Robert almost stopped breathing the second he said
that. “Is Nerissa ok?” He asked, fearing for what his
answer was gonna be. But Jason’s silence almost confirmed the answer to
Robert. “Jason, tell me she is ok!” He shout a bit. “I’m sorry Robert, she is in very critical
condition and…” Jason said with his voice starting to break. Robert’s eyes filled up with tears and he stopped
the car to the side of the road as he was on his way to the airport to buy the
tickets. “Just…tell me what happened?” He asked Jason
between sobs. “I don’t know exactly, but she was in a car
accident and her injuries are really serious Rob” Robert closed his eyes and felt a lump in his
throat. “How serious Jason?” He asked. Jason took another deep breath before telling him. “If she doesn’t get a heart transplant, she will
die” He said with a really low tone of voice. Robert didn’t say anything and he started to cry
really hard as Jason was hearing him through the phone. It was heartbreaking to
hear his friend being that sad, but he was too. “There must be something we can do Jason!” He said
in desperation. “Well, we need to find someone a donor, but it
costs too much money too” “Listen I will think about something, but I won’t
let her die, I won’t let my baby die” Robert said. “What are you gonna do ? Find a donor?” Jason
asked. “Yes, I will get to Spokane as soon as possible,
right now I’m on my way to buy the tickets and I can be there by tomorrow, then
I will use my college money and some savings to pay a donor, there has to be
one” He said. “I will help you find a list of donors Robert
while you get here” Jason said. “Thank you buddy, you are great!” “You don’t need to thank me, that’s what friends
are for” Jason said. Robert smiled. “You are a really great friend Jason and a really
great person, thank you for being there for me” He said. That same night, Caroline walked in Robert’s room
and saw him packing his stuff. She seated in his bed and just looked at him. “So you have the tickets?” She asked. “Yes.” He simply said. “When do you leave?” “Tomorrow afternoon” He replied. “I see, I’m gonna miss you so much honey” She said
standing up. Robert stopped what he was doing and looked at
her. “I will miss you too mom, but I promise you,we
will be together again soon” He said. He walked towards her and hugged her tightly and
started to cry. “I love you so much mom, you are a great person
and the greatest mother there is” He told her. “Honey, you don’t have to mention it, I love you
so much and I just want you to be happy” “And I will be happy mom” He said. He walked back to keep packing his stuff. “Mom?” He said. “Yes?” “Does Claudinne know I’m leaving?” He asked. “No, I haven’t tell her yet” “Don’t tell her, I will like to spend a few hours
with her tomorrow morning before I leave” He said. “Ok, that’s fine. And what about your father?” She
asked. He sighed and looked at her. “I will take care of that mom, don’t worry” He
told her kissing her forehead and walking downstairs. In Spokane, Tess didn’t leave her daughter’s side
for a minute. She was just looking at her, sleeping and knowing that she could
stop living at any minute, even the doctor had told her she could resist for a
few weeks, she was scared about it, she knew how difficult was to find a donor.
