We'll be together again...

We'll be together again...

A Chapter by Marcy Chavez

A few weeks have passed and Nerissa knew that it was time to tell her mother about her pregnancy, she just felt too guilty about hiding it from her. And that afternoon, after having dinner, she finally did it.

“Mom? I need to tell you something really important” She said, with a tone of voice lower than usual, the kind of “low” that automatically made her mother worry.

She looked at her and just waited.

“What is it?” She simply asked.

Nerissa took a deep breath and looked down, making it obvious that what she was about to say was something really big.

“I’m Pregnant” She said without looking at her mother.

Tess wasn’t sure if she had heard correctly or if this is one of her daughter’s jokes, she laughed a little because she felt scared and nervous.

“Excuse me?” She asked.

“Mom, I’m gonna have a baby” Nerissa told her again.

Tess stood up from the table and walked to the kitchen as if she hadn’t said anything important, but Nerissa immediately followed her.

“Mom, did you hear what I just said?” She asked, this time standing in front of her and looking her in the eyes.

“I did” She simply said.

Nerissa didn’t know what else to say as her mother was acting like if she didn’t care. But Tess was really confused and shocked, she just couldn’t understand how she have done something like that to her, after all the things she had done to protect her and take the best care of her.

“Do you know who the father is?” She asked Nerissa.

“Yes, I do” She replied.

“Ok, fine just, you let him know already?”

Nerissa shook her head slowly and looked down.

“If the father of that baby is who I think it is, it will be better if you don’t tell him” Tess told her.

“I’m not sure if I wanna tell him or not, that’s why I need you to give me advice” Nerissa said.

“Don’t tell him, is the best for everyone, trust me” Tess said, hugging her daughter.

Later that night she and Hazel went to take a walk to the park and talk more about what Nerissa needed to do.

“Have you tried to call him?” Hazel asked her.

“No, and I don’t think I will” She replied.

“Why not?” Hazel insisted.

“Because I hate him and I don’t think he deserves to know” Nerissa said.

“Well, you don’t deserve to raise the baby by yourself, after all it’s a two-person responsibility” Hazel said.

“Yeah, but…right now I just can’t think about anything and I sure don’t wanna think about him”

“True, I’m sorry” Hazel said.

As they were walking on the sidewalk, Devin got close to them while he was in his car.

“Hey girls!” He shouted scaring them.

Nerissa and Hazel looked down and saw him driving and with a beer on his hand, they knew he was very drunk.

“Hey Devin are you lost?” Hazel asked him.

“Very funny Hazel, but I’m not interested in what you want to say, actually I came here for my girl” He said.

“Your girl?” Hazel asked.

“Yes, that girl, is my girl!” He said pointing at Nerissa.

Then Nerissa looked back at him .

“Ok Devin that’s enough I’m not in the mood ok, so just go away!” She told him and then turned around to keep walking.

But Devin wasn’t in a mood for games either and he stopped the car and got out but for their surprise he was pointing a gun at them.

Nerissa couldn’t believe her eyes and she feared for her life as well as for Hazel’s life.

“Devin, what the hell are you doing?” She said really exalted.

“Yeah Devin it’s not funny” Hazel said.

But he kept pointing at them.

“Get in the car Nerissa” He told her.

“What? Are you crazy?” Nerissa nervously replied.

“Yeah, maybe I am since I lost you but now I’m about to get you back” he said.

“Come on nerissa let’s go, this idiot is drunk, we should call the police” Hazel said grabbing Nerissa’s arm and trying to walk away, but Devin shot Hazel’s leg making her fall to the ground.

Nerissa screamed scared and started crying.

“What have you done?” She yelled at Devin, and trying to see if Hazel was ok.

“Now you get in the car!” He told her again, but this time he grabbed her arm and forced her to get in.

She couldn’t stop crying and she hoped that Hazel was all right.

“We can’t leave her there!” Nerissa told Devin as he drove off.

“Now, you and I will be happy, together again” He told her smiling and crying at the same time.

Nerissa tried to take her cellphone out to dial 911 but he took it away from her.

“So I heard you are pregnant” He suddenly told her.

Nerissa looked at him and frowned, she had no idea how he knew.

“So is that stupid British boy the father?” He asked her.

But Nerissa didn’t want to talk to him.

“Is it?!” He asked rising his voice at her.

“Yes it is!” She said in desperation.

“I knew it! I knew you and him were going too far, but after I take you to where no one could find you, I’m gonna kill him” Devin said.

“Devin, this is not you, you are drunk and you don’t know what you’re saying, but when you calm down we can talk I promise.” She said trying to make him calm down.

“No, this time I need to make sure you are not going anywhere but where I am” He said as he started to drive faster.

“Devin please slow down, you’re scaring me” She begged.

But it was too late. Devin lost control of the car and rolled over several times, leaving them both unconscious and seriously injured.

Tess was looking through the window, wondering where her daughter could be and why she wasn’t responding on her phone. She feared for the worst and then she heard the phone ringing.

“Oh she is gonna hear me!” She said as she walked to pick it up.

But she dropped the phone from her hands as she heard what the people at the hospital told her. Her daughter had been involved in a serious car accident and she was in critical condition.
