I'm gonna be a daddy

I'm gonna be a daddy

A Chapter by Marcy Chavez

When Nerissa and Hazel finally went to see a doctor,he confirmed what she was hoping was not truth, she was pregnant and she knew that she was going to be on her own to raise her baby, she wasn’t planning of telling Robert about it, she didn’t even want to think about him anymore. At school she had turn into a complete different person than she used to be, and everyone who knew her noticed it.

The days following her doctor appointment, she went to talk to one of her teachers, she was trying to look for advice on how to deal with her pregnancy and most importantly, how to tell her mother. The teacher was really surprised herself hearing that about such a smart and serious girl like her, but she did everything she could to give her the best advice possible.

What Nerissa didn’t notice was, that Jason, the only friend Robert has made there, was walking by when he heard her saying the words: “I’m pregnant”, he immediately hid behind a wall and tried to hear what was going on. Not that he liked to hear private conversations but, he had promised Robert to take care of Nerissa in everything he could and to tell him all about the important things going on in her life, and this one was really important. So he found out that she was pregnant and that same afternoon, even he wasn’t sure about who the father of her baby was, he called Robert.

“Are you sure about that?” Robert asked Jason with his voice reflecting a lot of concern.

“Yes I’m very sure, she was telling that to one of the teachers” Jason replied.

Robert closed his eyes and sighed, he felt surprised, shocked, scared and anxious about knowing if he was the father or not. But he just couldn’t believe that Nerissa would just do it with someone else after him and he knew he had been the first one in her life, so he thought that he had to be the father of that baby. But he didn’t dare to call Nerissa and ask her, he felt nervous just thinking about it, but he knew it was the right thing to do.

So later that day he dialed her number only to find out she had changed it. He felt so powerless and desperate. His mother walked in his room and noticed.

“Robert, what’s the matter?” She asked.

“Nothing mom, why you ask?” He said.

“Well, you kind of look like something scared you “She said getting even closer to him.

“Mom, nothing scared me I’m fine “He replied trying to fake a smile for her.

Too bad for him that his mother knew him really well. So she sat next to him in his bed.

“You can tell me, whatever it is that is bothering you, I can help you” She said.

“I don’t think you can help me this time mom” He said looking down.

“Robert just tell me” She insisted.

After a few seconds of silence Robert took the courage to tell his mom the truth.

“Nerissa is pregnant, and I think I am the father” He said without looking at her.

Despite feeling shocked, Caroline tried hard to keep calm and say the best words she could to her son.

“Ok, so you two…?”

“Yes mom, we did” Robert answered before his mother could finish the question.

“I see, well did she called you or you called her?”

Robert shook his head and smiled sadly.

“She hates me because she thinks I abandoned her and I betrayed her trust, and I kind of did” Robert said.

“Honey, you didn’t!, it was not your choice to move back here and leave her alone, that was a decision that was not in your hands” Caroline said softly rubbing his arm.

“What am I gonna do mom? I need to see her, I mean as far as I know that is my baby and I need to be there with them” Robert said.

A few tears slipped out of Caroline’s eyes when she heard him saying that. It was just so nice to hear him say he wanted to be responsible for his future kid and for Nerissa. She smiled and took his hand as she looked at him in the eyes; Just like that time they were on the flight to Spokane, Robert looked at her eyes and he knew that everything was gonna be ok and that his mother will have the best solution.

“You should go” She suddenly said.

Robert was truly surprised to hear her say that.

“What?” He asked.

“I have some money saved and you can use it for the flight tickets” Caroline said.

“But, what about my father he won’t agree to that and you know it” He said.

“Don’t worry about him Robert, I’ll take care of that” She said smiling at him.

He hugged her and kissed her forehead.

“Mom, why you do that for me, even it could get you in trouble with my father?” He asked.

“Robert, parents will do anything to see their children be happy, I will, because I love you more than my own life” She said as she looked at him and smiled.

Those words gave Robert the courage and reassurance he needed, just like the previous times, his mother had helped him see things from a more clear perspective now.

He suddenly smiled and looked at her.

“I’m gonna be a dad, can you believe it?”

“It’s so amazing Robert” She said smiling.

“I’m so happy but terrified at the same time how is that even possible?” He said.

“Don’t worry everything will be fine”

“I just hope she accepts me again, and I think I will ask her to marry me, after all I made her a promise”

“You did?”

“Yes, I gave her a promise ring and I’m gonna keep my promise”

Caroline smiled and hugged him, she felt so proud of her son and of how much he had changed for good.
