Regret and Hurt

Regret and Hurt

A Chapter by Marcy Chavez

In the following days, Robert and his family headed back to England. Robert, once again felt angry and heartbroken, but this time for a complete difference reason. His face reflected the sadness he had been feeling for the past month, he didn’t even feel like arguing with his father about going back, something that was really strange for him. Of course Nerissa had been thinking about it a lot, she was still feeling so frustrated and betrayed that she just couldn’t even say good bye to him that morning, instead, she headed to school like any other normal day, but one person she couldn’t hide her feelings from was her best friend, Hazel, whom knew something was wrong the minute she saw her walking in the classroom.

“It’s because he left, isn’t it?” She whispered to Nerissa.

“Yeah” Nerissa replied with a soft whisper as she looked down.

Hazel smiled slightly and just hugged her.

“It’s gonna be ok, I promise you will be fine, maybe not now but, eventually” She said.

“I just don’t understand why would he make a promise just to break it like that” Nerissa said.

“Well, I don’t know either” Hazel answered.

“I am so angry Hazel”

“Yeah I know, I kind of hate him even more than when we first met him” She said.

“I am angry at myself for being so naive and believe that he actually cared about me, that he truly loved me, you know?” Nerissa said with her voice almost breaking.

Hazel gave her a sad smile and sighed.

“Well but that doesn’t matter now, I mean he is gone and I don’t think we will ever see him again” Nerissa said wiping off her tears.

Hazel knew that no matter what she said, she missed him terribly and was really heartbroken for not have said goodbye to him. But instead of saying something she just remained quiet.

After school, Nerissa was just sitting on a bench at the park when Devin suddenly came walking to her. He just stood behind her without saying a word.

“What are you doing here Devin?” She asked without even looking back.

“I just came here to ask if you are all right” He simply said.

“What do you care?” She asked sarcastically smiling.

He sighed and slowly seated next to her.

“I’m just trying to be nice Nerissa, please don’t think otherwise”

“Otherwise? You mean like thinking you will push me to the ground again?”

“You still angry about it, come on now” He said.

Even it had been months since that incident, it was still so fresh on her mind. She now felt more scared of Devin than she ever was of Robert.

“Ok, I got to go” She said standing up and walking away slowly.

Devin just remained seated there, watching her walk away and he felt humiliated and it was then when he realized that he was never gonna be back with her. Something that really hurt him.
