He is in love

He is in love

A Chapter by Marcy Chavez

Robert spent the night at the mountain, sleeping in the backseat of his car. He had his phone on his hands and just couldn't decide if dial her number or not. He thought he was going to regret it if he didn't, but when he was about to, his hands started to shake and the tears started to come out of his eyes, it was just complicated, confusing even. He just couldn't understand why it was so hard to talk to his girlfriend, or his ex-girlfriend, he wasn't sure about that now. But he found a solution; he took a notebook from his backpack and a pen and with the bright light of the moon helping him to see, he started to put all his thoughts and feelings down in a paper, everything he wanted to tell Nerissa.

Of course his parents were worried about him back home, Caroline was the one who was worried the most, like any other mother, she feared for the worst.

“I’m sure he is fine Caroline, let’s just go to sleep” Said James as he hugged her from behind.

“How can you say that? Our son didn't come back from school, it’s almost 2am!” Her voice broke as she replied to her husband.

“I mean, we both know Robert, and this is not the first time he’s done this, I’m sure he will be back in the morning. I think he is just pissed because we have to return to England” James said,

“But that doesn't make sense; he had wished to return to England since the minute we got here!” Caroline answered.

“Right, but, that was before he met that girl who lives next door, I think our Robert is deeply in love with her and he is just upset because he has to leave her”

Caroline looked at James and let a slight sad smile escape her lips.

“In love?, Robert?” She asked

“Yeah, why else would he be this mad?”

“James we can’t do this to him, we must find a way, I mean this is the first time our son is so happy about something and we can’t just  take it away, can’t he stay here maybe?” Caroline suggested James. She was hoping that James would come up with a solution and take a chance to finally do something good for his son.

But even James thought about it for a moment, he knew that it wasn't just up to him to change that decision.

“I’m sorry Caroline but…I just can’t do that”. He replied while looked at her with a sad look in his eyes, because he hated to disappoint her.

She looked at him, smiled and nodded her head and just went upstairs to bed.

The next morning, Robert woke up with the notebook on his chest; he had fallen asleep while he was writing the night before. He looked out the window and saw the beautiful sunrise like he had never seen it before and he wished that Nerissa could be right by his side. He drove back home,

When he got in, his mother was in the kitchen making breakfast. Claudine was the first one who saw him walking in. Her face brightens up as she saw him, and ran to hug him.

“Robert you are ok!” She said.

Robert smiled as he hugged her back and kissed her hair. Caroline immediately stopped what she was doing as she heard Claudine’s voice and walked to the living room. Her eyes filled up with tears as she saw him standing there, hugging his sister and smiling.

“Thank God that you’re ok” She told him.

“Why wouldn't be mom?” He told her, and then walked towards her and hugged her. “Mum, I’m sorry, I didn't meant to worry you” He told her.

“I will always be worried about you Robert, I am your mother, and that’s what mothers do”. She said with her voice breaking and wiping off the tears from her eyes”.

“Well, I’m gonna go upstairs to take a quick shower to go to school” He said and kissed her forehead before heading upstairs to his room.

Claudine followed him, and carefully walked in his room.

“Robert?” She whispered.

“Yeah?” He replied as he was taking some clean clothes out of his closet.

“I know you are sad because you won’t see her anymore” Said Claudine with her sweet little voice.

“See who?” Asked Robert, like he had no clue about what she was talking about.

“Your girlfriend” Said Claudine.

Robert smiled and looked down, then looked back at her.

“No, I’m not sad, I’m angry” He replied.

“With dad?”

Claudine’s words surprised Robert very much; it was like she finally understood what their father was doing to him and what she could expect in the future,

“No, with Nerissa” He surprisingly changed his answer. “If she really cared about me, she would've understood that this is not my fault”

“And what did she said?” Claudine asked.

“She told me she didn't want to see me anymore” Robert replied and walked to the other side of the room. “Now, I got to take a shower, so we talk later ok?” He told her.

Claudine walked out of his room and went to her room to get her backpack. She looked down her window and happened to see Nerissa walking out of her house for school. She looked sad and angry too. What Claudine couldn't understand was why she didn't want to see her brother anymore.
