Loss of sight

Loss of sight

A Poem by Minnie
"

I lost my right eye when I was 15 yrs old but never write about it. So this is a little bit to get me started

"

Pretty girls had long curls, pretty girls have painted nails, and pretty girls had nice cloths, well-mannered and no stains of their cloths from playing outside. Telling me I was different and special did not work, I felt different and knew. Showing the bruises and tears from the bullies made me strong, “never let your light fade “they say.

I saw the sun, I saw the moon, I am right eye blind but still human, and my life will never be what I want it to be. I was taught that I could do anything but now I will never get to have the same opportunities that others have. I want to fly a plane, but no one trust the one eyed population, you may crash. I want to be an astronaut, go to the moon and make a map of the stars, but you are no an “able bodied person” they say.

I am older, the pretty girls still are pretty girls, but I turn my back at the hits, they no longer hurt. I want to get out of here, I want to be more than 4’9, to be more than a “daughter”, a “sister”. I wanted to be part of the best population, I wanted to be in the military, I had plans, I had passion, but everyone saw the one flaw, I could not fight the good fight with one eye sight. I was destroyed, I kicked and screamed in my head. No one knows how depressing losing a physical part of you can be. I laughed at the jokes to hide the pain, I cried behind a locked door, I am not happy, I am not scared, I am numb and give up.

I am in college, I have “special accommodations” because I have a “physical disability”, but I never thought of it that way, I have always just been me. I am labeled, but still stable, I am unshakable, and unstoppable. I am doing something I love, something the one eyed me can do with no limitations.

I am not who or what I thought I could be, I am still human, I am still a woman, but I have seen many things in this world some make me sick to wonder what others have went through. Losing my right eye when I was fifteen due to medical issues has changed me for the better and for the worse. I have learned to fight a different fight, so stay strong. I have always been told “its just an eye”, “you will live”. The only sympathy I got was pity that I was small and weak, I am no longer that person, but I still do cry.
