Time again

Time again

A Poem by Shaun Rudie

I sense time,

I do

parts of me don't

though, I am often

late

I sense a limited

time to write, a

part of me says,

"put your pen away,

the paper in the folder,

walk to your car and

go home", never mind that

fish are literally

jumping out of the

water under a moody,

cool sky, or that

children bounce basketballs

on the concrete court plopped

down in the middle of

the grass,

or that pumpkins guard

a house entrance now a

month long,

or that tiny biting

insects are choosing

me

I know time

it is a monster

eating up my days,

aging my skin as chlorophyll leaves

a leaf,

introducing itself over

and over to me

in the faces of my

friends, family

I sense you time,

but the living part

of me…well, I'm ignoring

you

 oh look, there's the

ice cream man

hmmm, I've also

noticed colors ignore you too,

changing at times

to evade

you

dark cloud fingers

stretch across

the dusk sky,

a pink red furnace, tucked away

near the

horizon

the ember of

sun defies you

too,

it's just going

to rest a while…

give night a

chance to inspire

the likes of you

away

I read this through, found myself reading quickly, hungrily, found unexpected tears running down my face. This piece is full of feeling, of visuals that make me remember, that conjur up times, places, memories, my dad's dying... I love that you are rebelling: "I sense you time/but the living part/of me...well I'm ignoring/you", and you extend my understanding by giving me visuals, emotional metaphoric visuals (stormy sky, setting sun). I find the ending powerful because your defiance is backed up by the mighty sun, and you wrap it up without ending it completely for me--- you give me the night, and the knowing that the warm, full-of-life sun is "just going to rest a while". I can't help thinking of my daddy just "resting awhile", and dear friends I have lost, and yes, how my hair is graying... And I grab onto the night, taking all my chances, too. This was a real gift to read.
