A Poem by Shaun Rudie

with your gold eyes

what do you see

feel the stroke of my hand

on your fur

my smile baring my teeth

but you seem to know

my intentions

stretch out on me

unconcerned

wind howl

sadness

trying to settle me

life has no such hollow sound

it is death that cries

outside my window

claws knead my skin

little pricks of attention

life is in your hands

don’t just hold it

pay attention to

it

we sleep

warm bodies assuring each

we will wake

How do you do it - take from the moment something real, something tangeable, and use it so profoundly to talk about life?! Wow - this one at once comforting, then death beckoning, then teaching without pushing too hard: "life is in your hands/don't just hold it/pay attention to it"
I love that you don't name what you are describing, but lead me to see and know---it is my own discovery and that always feels good. I find comfort.
Your gift to me is this: When I read, you take me on a journey, and always there is a surprise, or some new way to see or think or feel about life. And if not new, then another, deeper or more beautiful way to see something familiar. Your poems endure because of this - I don't tire of reading them. Thank you.
