A Poem by Shaun Rudie

 I sit

calm as untouched paper

watching children in a park

 pretty, timid,

soft

One child watches shiny

foil wrapping, decorative paper,

bounce along the grass

 breathing in violin bursts

her giggles pierce the air

warm elderly hands reach out in a yawn,

catch the giggles, and

weave a hug about them

the hands are grandfatherly, careworn,

quilt soft

soft as introspective thought

the very pores breath out a

lullaby

the park is sprinkled with a

salt shaker coating, a rainbow of

children granules falling

to the ground

getting up bacteria red,

scratched, crying

One with

sharp black hair of night,

eyes pinched to a crease,

mixes time with One of

yellow hair, their minds

uncluttered

here

is growth

life is robust

on that flannel green

a hearty peace is tasted,

divided, laid on

the tongue, mind

to live is to mirror

children’s curiosity

to have the sun melt

crayon prejudices into

a soft pool of  One color,

all

to accept differences

  savor the thought like

pennies clinking into

a jar
