how do we manage to get along with people...social manners?

Unchecked openness does not exist

When people talk, so why persist?

Everyone does it…hide their inner

Self from the outer world…a sinner

Whose every alliance is shaky,

No matter whether it’s necessary.

Social creatures encouraged to hold

Back most of anything they are told

And most of what they think, what they feel.

Without barriers, wouldn’t they be ants?

Oblivious, are they in a trance?

Do people not hide their inner selves

So they can get along, get off the shelves?

So they can feel the equal power

Of belonging…not a wallflower.

I think you're right about that--they hold back their real thoughts in order to be accepted. (Spoken by life-long square peg, wallflower)
