empire. conquered realms stretching far
and wide Even then,
Persians looked to the distant past
for
metaphor A griffin
and a winged goddess,
representing aspiration. But By
the time Persepoli s’
influence arrived At a high
point the
ravages of centuries had
been running quietly in the
background for
more than a millennium. Darius
came
of
age in
ruins and now ancient
door ways
are
