People bully others because they are insecure about themselves. If you do not see yourself in a good light, you take it out on yourself or take it out on others. As teenagers and young adults, we do not know how to express our emotions. We all want to fit in but not everyone does by the same standards.
Growing up I was always picked on because I was a bit darker than all of my classmates. I never stood up for myself and I almost laughed along with them. Discrimination is a hurtful thing and I was exposed to this beginning in the third grade. I did not know how to deal with these tauntings so I often stayed quiet. And the silence I had crept its way into the center of my everyday life. Traumatic events do not have to leave physical scars to “count”, a lot of these are mental and emotional as well. All of the “black jokes” get old before they were even brought up, you begin to have every single one etched into your brain like they are the only subjects that matter in school.
