Five Preternatural Creatures and A Lady

Five Preternatural Creatures and A Lady

A Story by Regan Meade

A loud clang was heard with an excessive laugh following after. The noises just got louder after that first clang and the laughter that followed got more annoying. In another room, called a bedroom, a muffled sigh escaped a clump of covers. Blue-green eyes glowed in the dark room as the figure crawled out of its cocoon. Tan hands threw the blanket off to the side then stretched up towards the holey ceiling.

“It is way too early for this,” the figure stated.” Why couldn’t they have waited till at least a few hours after dawn?”

The figure walked down the short hallway towards the kitchen. The kitchen was a mess there were colors on the wall that she had never, or even wish to have, seen. The pans were embedded into the wall next to the doorway and four little green men with tattered leather clothes were jumping up and down laughing as they threw the kitchen knives at each other.  The person cleared their throat gaining the attention of the four men, who froze when they saw who was standing in the doorway. The tension was thick and suddenly one of the knives fell from the walls landing with a clatter.  The four little green men watched with baited breathe as the figure glanced around at the kitchen. This went on for several minutes until the smallest green man took a step forward, swallowed, and began to talk.

“Good Morning Ellette,” he said. “I hope you slept well.”

“You moron, I doubt she slept well if she’s in here with that look to her face,” said the fat one.

“Well I think she looks well rested,” said the tall one.

“What are you on, Opium? She is obviously angered beyond all imagining at the kitchen,” said the last with a high pitched voice.

Ellette watched as the four began fighting about who was right. Sighing she grabbed the nearest thing, which happened to be an apple, and threw it at the four little green men. The apple hit the little one before bouncing and hitting the others on the head.

“Boys what have I told you about making a mess in the kitchen?”

“Not to,” the four replied sheepishly.

            “So what did you do?”

            “We made a mess.”

“Right and what time is it exactly?”

“It’s more than several hours before dawn.”

“Alright, now would someone like to tell me WHAT THE HELL YOU WERE THINKING!?”

The four coward at her enraged voice, they forgot how scary she could be when she was upset or annoyed. The fat one was the one who explained.

“Well, um, Ellette…LEADER ONE STARTED IT!” Fat one said before running and cowering behind the smallest one.

“I did not,” Leader one mumbled. “Ellette we were just having a bit of fun, you were out cold when we checked on you.”

“I was, was I?” Ellette stated with an unbelieving voice.

“Yeah, yeah you were out cold. I don’t know why though, maybe you drank too much ale last night, or you could have been drugged at the tavern, or a horse bit you on the butt and then you got into a fight and then you could have passed out from exhaustion.” Tall one rambled on not noticing the danger signs that were going off around him.

Ellette’s eye-brow was ticking with every remark that Tall One made. She couldn’t believe that he thought that she was going to buy what he was saying. The others backed away from Tall One and hid behind the turned over table. Whatever was going to happen it was not going to end well; no, not at all.

“Tall One maybe you should stop talking,” Fat One whispered.

“What; why? I’m not doing anything wrong.” He stated with a bewildered look on his face.

“Tall One shut up!” Leader one ordered pointing towards Ellette who was seething her face a hellish red.

Tall One turned around and looked at the girl whose hands clenched. Her tan face was now flushed with anger and her eyes burned with the thought of attack.

“Run,” was all that came from her mouth.

He began shaking and turned on his foot and took off running Ellette chasing him and the others following shouting out pleas for Ellette to stop.

***

Ellette chased Tall One into the dark forest but soon lost him in the underbrush. She continued forward looking around absently for her little green friend, her anger slowly subsiding as she wandered deeper into the Dark Forest. Grabbing a twig from the ground Ellette threw it into the shadows of the trees.

“Stupid goblins, they always cause so much trouble,” she muttered kicking a rock. “Who starts making noises before dawn anyway? I mean, all I wanted was a little more sleep, is that too much to ask? Apparently it is.”

Unbeknownst to Ellette someone was watching her every move as she continued her small rant.

***

A male figure followed Ellette through the forest observing her and what she was doing here. He watched as she looked around as if she was looking for something or someone. The male admitted to himself that she was actually kind of pretty. She had shoulder-length, wavy-red hair, she was a little on the short side being around 5’3,” but she had evenly tanned- unblemished skin. She wore a dark blue feminine tunic and what looked like cotton tan pants tucked into knee-high black boots.

“She doesn’t even seem to have reached her adult hood,” He thought. “She looks no older than 17 at the most.”

He watched as she huffed and sat down on a fallen log leaning on her knees. The male let out a noiseless chuckle as she said something about goblins causing so much trouble. But what shocked him was that not a second after he thought that she looked up and around asking who was there.

“It couldn’t be; I made no noise. How did she hear me?” Was the panicked thought that passed through his mind.

“Hello? Is anybody there?” She asked. “Tall One if this is a joke it’s not funny at all”

He watched as she looked around the area.

“Well aren’t you a strange girl. Talking to no one but your-self,” he answered, his voice echoing throughout the area.

“Well aren’t you a coward for not showing yourself.” She replied tersely.

The figure couldn’t help but let out a low chuckle, the girl was odd that was for sure. He chuckles turned to an indignant snort; he didn’t like being called a coward when he was nothing of the sort.

“I am not a coward, girl. It is merely a strategic move to conceal one’s self from unknown eyes.”

“Yeah “strategic move” what a load of bull that’s just another way of saying that you’re a coward,” She let out a soft laugh. “It’s alright to be scared there’s nothing wrong with it.”

He growled low in his throat that little “child” had called him a coward again, twice! In one sentence she had called him a coward. Being fed up with her mouth he dropped down from the trees three feet away from her and glared with all his might his red eyes burning with an unspoken challenge. He would scare her and then they would see who the true coward is.

***

“Well,” she thought.”This was an interesting occurrence.”

The man had jumped three feet in front of her and he was obviously trying to intimidate her but what she saw before her did nothing but make her fall backwards laughing. The man had cute fuzzy cat ears and a long puffy black tail. She looked at him from the ground still laughing. He was cute in a way;  shoulder length black hair deep, red eyes, a rugged face , a wiry physic that didn’t make her feel intimidated at all, and the cape he was wearing was just ridiculous. His clothes reminded her of the old ninjas she had read about in her stories. All in all the man looked a bit awkward in a boyish cute way.

“Stop laughing at me!” He pouted once again his intent to intimidate her was unsuccessful.

“I’m sorry, so sorry, but you’re so cute!”

The deadpanned look he gave was enough to send Ellette into another laughing frenzy. It took her about five minutes to completely stop laughing and when she got back up onto the log she saw that the man had sat down and was leaning against a tree his tail flopping around lazily.

            “You done now,” he asked.

            Ellette nodded. “Yes I am.”

“Good, now want to tell me why you are in this forest alone? Aren’t you afraid of the dark little girl?”

“Not particularly, but I do think that it’s time for me to go home (those four imps have probably destroyed my house,)” she looked at him. “What’s your name; mine’s Ellette.” She paused as if in deep thought. “I am NOT a CHILD!”

He seemed to think about if before saying that his name was Verge Callahan from Cater-lily all the while laughing at her incredulous shout. Ellette chuckled a bit at the information; she should have known he would be from Cater-lily it was where all the cat people tended to live. She told him that she was originally from Ice Mountain but decided that she didn’t really like the cold so she moves to the Dark Forest Valley. Time seemed to still as the two sat there conversing about everything and nothing. Looking up through the leaves of the canopy Ellette gasped the sky was darker, much darker, and the stars sat in their place in the heavens twinkling in delight as if laughing at her, that meant she had been out there all day.

“The boys must be worried,” she said. “I really should be going home now but it’s too dark to see.”

“I’ll help you--- If you want.”

“Yes I would very much like that Verge. Thank you so much!”

Verge got up grabbed her hand and began heading towards the direction she had came. Well Navigating in almost pitch black was not as easy as it seems even for a cat person. The dark forest was aptly named because it was darker than ink during the night and a bit lighter shade of black during the day. Ellette sighed for the tenth time since he started to pull her along supposedly in the direction of her home, though she highly doubted it.

            “ Verge.”

            “What?”

            “I think that we’re lost.”

            “We’re not lost.”

“Verge we passed this tree four times; we’re going in circles which reinstates that fact that: WE ARE LOST!”

“I know where I’m going Ellette; we’re not lost.”

“Look why don’t we ask for directions.”

Verge stopped and turned to her with a deadpanned expression, though she couldn’t necessarily see it because of the whole not-having-any-light situation.

“And who are we going to ask hmm? That stump, oh the bush, or no how about the deadly insects that live in the canopy. Ellette we are not lost, I know exactly where we are and which way we’re going.”

With that said he turned and began pulling her in the same direction that they were going before.

“I still say that we’re lost.”

            “Shut up Ellette.”

***

Three hours had passed and they were back to where they began; the exact same spot that this whole mess started in and Ellette was not a happy person. Verge sat on the stump and thought about what went wrong.

“Maybe we should have taken a right at the puddle and not a left. Or it could have been that left that we took at the moss pile.”

Ellette rolled her eyes and rubbed her hands together. It was getting colder.

“Ah! I got it; it was supposed to be a right at the oak tree and a left at the mud pool! Let’s go!”

“Verge no. We are going to ask for directions.”

An owl perched on a rock watched as the two argued over why they should and shouldn’t ask for directions. It’s usually wide eyes got even wider when Ellette pointed toward it.

“You! Which way is it the Dark Forest Valley?”

            “Who?”

            “You.”

            “Who?”

“YOU! WHICH WAY IS IT TO THE DARK FOREST VALLEY!”

The frightened bird pointed its wing to the left.

“And we keep going straight right?”

The owl nodded fearfully. Ellette sighed and walked over to the bird and gave it a big hug saying that she was sorry and that she didn’t mean to shout. Ellette released the bird and watched as it flew deeper into the inky darkness.

“THANK YOU!” She yelled after it. “See now that wasn’t so hard now was it?”

“Whatever,” Verge grumbled. “Let’s just go.”

Several minutes passed as the two walked in silence towards her home.

“Hey,” She started. “Verge why aren’t you holding my arm?”

            “Because you hugged the bird.”

“You’ve got to be kidding me.”

“They have all sorts of diseases and now you might be infected with one or something.”

Ellette rolled her eyes at him from the short time that she has known him she’s come to realize that he could be quite childish. Seeing a light Ellette let out a loud ‘whoop’ and started to run towards it.

“Verge look we’ve reached the end!”

Verge said nothing as Ellette spun in circles at the forest entrance. Sensing that something was wrong Ellette looked over at her male companion.

            “Verge, what’s wrong?”

“Well I’ve brought you home so I guess I’ll leave.”

“You don’t have to go. You know I might need some help getting through the door with all the mess those goblins have surely made.” She held out her hand with a smile.”Come on. I’d like you to meet a few friends.”

Verge hesitantly took her hand and allowed her to pull him along all but forgetting about the disease ridden bird she had hugged a minute ago. Ellette opened the door and gasped in shock. Her house wasn’t a total disaster it was actually neat and orderly defiantly not the way she left it early that morning. Walking to the main room she saw her four goblin friends sitting on the floor with sad looks on their faces.

            “What if she’s dead?!”

            “She’s not dead Fate One.”

“What if a GIANT SPIDER ate her and is using her bones as chopsticks.”

“Smallest One Spider’s don’t use chopsticks.”

            “It's my entire fault!”

“Yes Tall One it is. If you would have shut your blubbering mouth when we told you to Ellette wouldn’t be missing.”

“Hey Leader One…If Ellette’s dead do you think she would mind if I had her crimson dragon?”

Ellette and Verge were almost rolling on the ground by this time. The four goblins had yet to realize that they were in the room.

“Smallest One I’m not sure but maybe if you asked her you’d know.”

“Alright,” said Smallest One. “Wait how do I do that?”

Ellette took a deep breath to calm her laughter before leaning on the door frame her arms wrapped around her stomach.

“Why don’t you just turn around and ask?” She said.

“Well that’s a dumb idea she’s not even…” Leader one stated before trailing off and looking back. “Hey! I found Ellette!”

Verge looked at the shocked little goblins.

“So these were the trouble makers you were ranting about?” He looked them over.” They don’t seem like much to me.”

The four goblins looked at each other before grouping up into a huddle and whispering to each other. They broke up and gained an innocent looks on their faces, though they didn’t look all that innocent with their sharp teeth glinting in the dim light and the dark shadows covering their faces.

“GET HIM!” Shouted Smallest one and all four of the goblins leaped over the furniture like deer and tackled Verge to the ground.

Ellette watched as the five tumbled around on the ground in a dust pile. Arms were flailing everywhere, feet landing hits in horrible areas. Things seemed to be normal and Verge didn’t seem to notice that he had gotten over his nervousness while wrestling with her friends.

“Boys stop you’re going to hit the lamp!” Ellette yelled. “I’m serious! Don’t!”

Yes everything was normal within Ellette’s home and as she chased the five boys out the doors and into the night a smile was plastered onto her face the entire time. The five boys and she lived happily ever after… Or did they?
