Chapter 16

I was looking out the window, at a bird that was singing what I imagine was a beautiful song when someone tapped my head hard. I winced and turned slowly, finding myself face to face with Sasuke. I smiled and threw my arms around him, my back protesting angrily. Sasuke returned my hug and said something in my ear. I blinked and shoved him off of me. He stared at me curiously.

Kakashi Sensei pushed Sasuke aside and looked at me, from the movement in his jaw I could tell he was saying something...But I couldn’t tell behind that mask. I stared at him, blinking in confusion. Anger flashed in his eyes.

“I’m deaf.” I said.

They all stared at me.

What happened? Sasuke mouthed.

I had just finished explaining when the Hokage walked in, Kiba hot on his heels. When Kiba saw me he tried to run towards me but the Hokage held him back, whispering something in his ear. Fear flashed across his face and he ran to my side.

Misaki?! Misaki?! Can you hear me?! He mouthed, probably yelling.

I bit my lip and shook my head.

His face went blank as the Hokage walked to the other side of my bed, putting a hand on my shoulder and looking down at me.

Hello, Misaki, how are you feeling today? He asked cheerfully.

I smiled, “Fine. My back doesn’t hurt as much,” I said.

He cupped his ear.

“Fine. My back doesn’t hurt as much,” I said louder.

He grinned and turned to Kakashi Sensei saying, She’s going to be discharged today. She’ll need someone to look after her.

Kakashi Sensei must’ve replied because the Hokage said, I don’t have anybody in mind, did you?

At once Kiba jumped up, I’ll do it! He yelled..Maybe.

The Hokage was quiet.

Wait! Let me do it! I haven’t seen her in 2 weeks! Or at least let someone trustworthy like Naruto do it! Sasuke exclaimed.

What?! Kiba scowled, glaring at Sasuke.

I lip trembled and I covered my eyes.

A few seconds went by when someone tapped my hands, telling me to remove them. I took them away and looked around, no one was yelling anymore.

When she does that it means she doesn’t want to hear anymore. The Hokage explained. 

He then went over the list of hand motions we made up such as, the ear cupping for louder and holding up your hand when you want to say something. And then the basics, shaking head meant no, nodding head meant yes...And things like that.

They were all quiet.

The Hokage sighed and mouthed, I need to cover your eyes for a minute ok?

I nodded as he covered my eyes. I waited for 5 minutes until I felt something stabbing in my left forearm. I winced but didn’t move. I knew it was just the IV being removed. Another 5 minutes and I felt the blanket lifted off of me. Then he removed his hand. 

I was sitting in my clothes, the IV gone, no bandages except for on my head and torso. I blinked in confusion.

Kiba and Sasuke are going to take you home. Ok? The Hokage said.

I scratched my head and nodded.

How many days do we have? Kiba asked.

5 the Hokage responded.

I frowned. What are they talking about? I closed my eyes and picture what they were talking about, getting an answer almost instantly. I lurched forward.

“Chunin Exams.” I breathed.

They looked at me, everyone surprised except for Kiba and the Hokage.

Yes, Misaki. The Chunin Exams are in 5 days. We’re hoping that you’re hearing will return by then. He said.

I glanced nervously at Kiba.

It’ll be ok, he mouthed.

I nodded and held out my hand. He looked at me confusingly. I frowned and held my hand out to Sasuke. He grinned and took it immediately, helping me off the bed and putting my arm over his shoulder. Kiba grabbed my other hand and intertwined our fingers. I raised my eyebrows at him.

So you don’t fall over. He mouthed. I sighed and shook both of them off, pushing them aside and walking towards the door, only limping a small amount.

Someone grabbed my shoulder and I stopped.

“What?” I hissed.

I turned and saw the Hokage mouth the words, What do you think your doing? You need the help you can get. Do you understand how close you were to dying?!

“I don’t care. I don’t need help. I’m fine.” I spat, shaking off his hand and walking out the door.

I glanced back and saw them following me down the hallway. I grit my teeth and flashed forward, flashing down the stairs in seconds and out the doors of the hospital. I kept flashing until I was miles outside of the Leaf Village, the sunset casting orange and red rays all over my body.

I panted and sat down on a rock in the forest, my arms on my knees, head bowed as sweat poured down my face.

I’m not weak. I’m fine. I don’t need to hear to be a ninja. I thought firmly. Are you sure about that? Ryuu asked humorously. Oh shut up. I’m fi-

I stopped as someone’s chakra pattern flashed beside me and I spun around, kunai raised.

There was no one there. I blinked and glanced around, no one. The pattern flashed behind me. I spun around, no one was there.

What’s going on?! I thought nervously.

See what happens, Misaki? When you rely on yourself? When you don’t have anyone next to you? When you have no one? Itachi mouthed. 

I gasped and slashed my kunai through his head as the illusion disappeared. He appeared again behind me.

Why can’t you understand? You need other people, Misaki. Do you want to know why you need other people? It’s because...You are weak. He said with a smile.

Rage pumped through my body as I slashed again and again through his illusions. 

You are weak, Misaki. You can’t do anything right...You’re nothing...Nothing but a..., I slashed through the illusion as another appeared right next to it. Monster...., It finished with a smirk.

I screamed into the night sky and slashed again, collapsing and screaming as I pounded the floor. 

He appeared in front of me again, You are weak. And that is why you shall not accomplish anything. You are weak, and that is why you must die. He mouthed, slashing sideways with his kunai and cutting my head straight off.

My mouth still open in a silent scream as my head hit the floor.
