Masked tears

Filled with sadness
i walk these rainy streets
as i walk past others
i wonder, are they as sad as me?

They all look so happy
a smile on every face
i smile back
Even though i don't feel the same way

is it something we all do?
Do we all keep our emotions bottled up inside?
And i wonder, if it wasn't for the rain
would you see tears in all of our eyes?

I think our world today is such a strange place to exist in. No social norms or social expectations (compared to the past), we are told to and not to hide our emotions, what to wear what not to wear, wear what you shouldn't or don't because we're all individuals.
I suppose what I mean is that people are so different that we can never truly read a person, but that's okay. In the end it's only ourselves we can ever be truly honest with. Despite this, I've found it true that every person hides their sadness to some sort of degree, and tend to dwell on it. Perhaps we're all walking around with sorrow on our minds, looking to others wondering why they should be so happy while they're looking back wondering the same.
I hope I didn't word puke on you, it's 3am and I think I'm just about zombified ;)

It's true, you can not be sure of anyone else's emotional state. Many people mask their feelings with a smile, but the truth is, most people do not want to really know how you feel when they say, "How are you?" Thought provoking, Mike. Well written. Lydi**
