What is poetry?

This is what poetry is to me

The poems i write, are not for me
they're already in my head, so what good would that be?
I write poems, for others to read
the way a painting is made to be seen
i want to paint a picture, in my readers mind
i want them to feel emotions, with each and every line
sometimes i write to vent, or to just let my feelings out
but that shouldn't be my intent, that's not all writing should be about
its about entertaining you the reader, and taking you places you've never been
that's what goes through my mind, each time i pick up the pen
And when my poem is through
i want you to feel asthough it was written, just for you
so when you ask,"what is poetry?"
I will answer,"its all for you, not for me."

Well penned. Yes, writing is different things to different people. I write first and foremost in aid of my personal transformation, but there is always the voice of the audience in the back of my mind giving me the mojo to write well and to write often. It's like when you are alone you generally cook simple meals but when you have friends around to share your handy work you can be inspired to cook up an absolute feast.

I feel the last line would flow as well as the rest, if it was "It's all there for you, not for me." Great rhymes!

I agree when you said that writing is not all about venting out our feelings (though I often approach writing as a means of escape). I remember I once attended a writing workshop conducted by an award-winning local writer. He said, "Show me a person who says he writes only to express and I'll tell him that's he's a liar. Once the words are on the paper, a poem has been born, and it's meant to be read." He mentioned more that sounded similar with the thoughts in this poem.

Brilliant effortless rhymes and fluid flow of thought. Clever write! :x

Written like a true poet :)
being a poet should mean just that to anyone who is a true poet and thats also what it means to me.
Poets love to write not only because they love it but for others.
They want to inspire, sometimes they want people to relate.
Poetry is full of emotions and feelings these reasons and so much more is what makes poetry great poetry.
I think for a poem to sound like a poem it also needs to rhyme but that's just me, this is the only difference poets usually have, some poets are freelance some ant.

Thank you Mike! You sure have painted a great picture of the poet. The imagery is wonderful and yes, poetry is about letting that inner you out as well as trying to express to others how you are feeling at any one time.
