Dreams and reality

What makes reality real and a dream or thought just that, a dream or thought? When we dream or imagine something so clearly that it puts us there, why isn't it real? Reality is exactly like a dream in the sense that once the moment is gone it is only a memory or a dream, so what makes it real?
