Goodnight Dad

Goodnight Dad

A Poem by MikeV

Today is Saturday and Saturdays rule.
Why you ask? Because on saturdays there's no school.
So today is our day to hang out
Eat cereal and watch cartoons till twelve.
Oh Daddy, how you make my heart melt
I wanna tell you I love you, but I don't know how.
Later, when the time is just right
I know, I'll tell you tonight
Finally the time came and I gathered all the strength I had
But all that came out was,"goodnight dad."
I'll tell him tomorrow, for tomorrow's another day.
Unfortunately, I awoke to the news that through the night, my dad had passed away.
The day came when I saw him in the pine box
To this day, I have never cried so much
I wanted to tell him,"I love him," it was the last chance I had
But when I said goodbye to him,all I could say was,"goodnight dad."

Wow, this almost had me in tears! I can feel the pain between the lines...
The "Goodnight, Dad" had me thinking that death is not the end. In the poem 'Thanatopsis', death is likened to an afternoon nap, and the statement "Goodnight, Dad" simply shows the belief that the person has not died; rather, he/she is merely sleeping. And we look forward to the day when we will lie in sleep after them and wake up with them, too.

This is a moving write, Mike. :)

I understood that you were writing of spending Saturdays with your Dad. You expressed it well and I could feel your emotions, the hesitance to speak of your feelings to your Dad and the regret after you found out he was gone. Another reminder to tell our loved ones our feelings while we can.

All she has grown up to do is say, good night dad...yet in the end you know deep inside that the "I love you" in embedded in them...that's the part that keeps on giving no matter what the last words were that she uttered out in the end...

Ahh how sad Mike. This resonates from your heart and is something we are all guilty of NOT doing many times in our lives, for whatever reason.
Poignant, thoughtful and heart wrenching.
I remember doing the same with my dad. Saturday mornings were the only time I saw him. He worked about 3 jobs and I rarely saw him. I treasure those times.
This reminded me of them.

Thank you! :)
That is the moment of pure sadness. I know what it is like to lose your father and not tell him what you really wanted to say. It brought a tear to my eye. it was well done.

Thank you so much for reading and reviewing :)
Sometimes you don't have to say the words...as they say actions speak louder then words...blood is thicker then water...as long as he knew and i'm sure he did...nicely penned Mike:)
