HIMA Story by Bailey TaintedAngelthis is based off something that had actually happened to me last year....3:00 p.m., school is finally out. I slide out of my desk in Algebra and head for the door. Fatso, on the other hand, cut in front of me and decided to take his time. When I found an opening I quickly swerved past him and out the door. Ok, so maybe I was overly excited about school getting out, seeing as its only half way through the year and not the last day of school. It’s Friday though and, well, the weekend shall be coming up. Staying up late and sleeping in. Every teenagers dream right? I race past everyone down our outside hallways and make my way to bus 666. I’m surprised they even have a bus with that number seeing as there’s so many religious freaks at this school. Then again I don’t have a religion so it really doesn’t bother me. I’ve been starting to see why though. We’re living in the desert, it’s fall, the temperature is still in the 100’s, and this bus has no air conditioning. Maybe the number 666 really is a good number for this bus. “Crystal, do you have any gum?” I was cut off by the girl sitting behind me, towards the back of the bus. “No I don’t. Sorry Lisa.” We weren’t exactly friends because we never hang out or anything, but we don’t hate each other either. Well at least I think she doesn’t hate me. I just remembered what I was going to do as soon as I got on the bus. I un-zipped the smallest pocket of my backpack and pulled out my Ipod and cell phone. I put the headphones in and start blasting “Hit the Floor” from “Bullet For My Valentine” to drown out the noise of the bus. Almost every day I’m lucky enough to have my own seat on the bus. Today was one of those days. Once my phone was completely on, I flipped it open and scrolled through the numbers. I found the number I was looking for and hurriedly started to text as the bus pulled out of the parking lot. I look through my window, staring blankly, waiting for a reply. I start to re-think about why I was doing this just like I have been all day. He’s in so much pain and there’s nothing I can do about it. Awhile ago, he was diagnosed with a be-nine tumor in his right knee, meaning it wasn’t cancerous. Sadly it causes him great pain in that right knee. It’s to the point he has to use crutches. The doctor said it is quite common in teens and should heal itself in a matter of a year or so. If that didn’t happen, surgery would be required. The doctor had prescribed different pain medication but nothing seemed to work. Then yesterday he had to be taken the E.R. because the pain had exceeded excrutiating levels. He was crying and was writhed in pain because of the torment it gave him. Sadly I could not go to the E.R. and be there for him. He did say they gave him morphine which had taken the pain away for some hours and gave him another doctor appointment. Apparently they wanted to keep surgery at a last resort. His mom had him stay home today due to his knee and recovering from all the medication. Last time we talked he had fallen asleep… I flutter my eyes open as I feel my phone buzz in my hand and on my thigh. I flipped it open quickly and sighed when it was his mom who had texted me. I was afraid she hadn’t gotten my text. The text read, “sure as long as one of your parents can bring u and pick u bck up.” I had texted her asking if I could come over today even though it was short notice. They live half an hour away. Oh, and I asked her not to mention this to him for I wanted it to be a surprise if it was going to work out. I replied saying I will text my dad and ask. My phone buzzed again and the message was from him. He’d just woken not too long ago and was still groggy. It seems his dad made him sleep downstairs the whole night and not in his room. All in all he seemed to be doing alright. I replied to him then texted my dad asking if I go to his house. While I waited for replies I skip through songs on my Ipod landing to “Here Without You”. I tried not to cry because this was our song, and I had listened to it repeatedly last night when I couldn’t be there for him. Sure, yeah, it seems dumb to be crying over someone with pain in their knee, but I care about him so much. There was nothing I could do to stop the pain. So, I thought I could at least surprise him with this. The reply I got from my dad shattered my heart, “sorry not 2nite” I got another saying, “mayb 2morrow”. I tried with all my might again not to shed tears. I text his mom again saying I can’t tonight but thank you anyways. I curled in a little ball on the bus seat still listening to our song. As he keeps texting me I can tell he still didn’t know what was going on. As the bus started nearing my stop I got another text which was from his mom again. I swear if I wasn’t on that god for saken bus I would’ve screamed and jumped up and down. The text had said she would actually go ahead and get off work early and come pick me up and drop me back off at home later tonight. I stormed off the bus when it skipped to a stop at my stop. I tried so hard not sprint but to speed walk home. That didn’t work out too well. It did give me more time to quickly call my dad. Thankfully he picked up after the first two rings. I explained to him how his mom could come get me and all that good stuff. He said it’s alright but only if she can do that. Once he hung up I dialed with my shakey hands his mom’s number. When she answered I think I was talking a million miles per hour. “Hello?” “Hey it’s Crystal!” “Oh, hey Crystal! So is it ok with your dad for you to come over?” she asked when she realized it was me after I told her, (doesn’t she know about caller I.D.?). “Yep, he said I can as long as you can come get me then drop me back off home later.” “Ok I can do that. He has no clue!” she exclaimed, “He’s just laying on the sofa playing one of his stupid Xbox games again hehehe! My husband doesn’t even know. He just looked at me when I said I’d be going out for a bit. Ok, anyways I’m on my way and I’ll see you when I get there.” “Alright then, bye.” Click, the call was ended just like that. I snapped my phone shut and ran upstairs to fix my hair the best I can. I sneered at the mirror. I didn’t care for my long dark hair and topaz eyes, I thought I was ugly but people insisted otherwise. All I did was run my brush through it quickly then went into my room and threw on a different shirt. It wasn’t that much of a difference of how I looked a minute ago, but I wasn’t disheveled looking either. Only then I realized I still had half an hour before his mom would get here. I tried to waste my time by watching t.v. downstairs. That didn’t really do anything, because every five minutes I kept looking at the clock. So I decided to make some Easy Mac, and I grabbed a monster. Of course, when I was done, and when I least expected it, the door bell rang. I quickly turned off the television and went to the door. “Hey, you ready to go?” It was his mom, obviously, who asked as soon as I had opened the door. “As ready as I’ll ever be.” I said back. “Oh he still doesn’t know. He thinks I’m going out to get him some food hehehe!” She laughed almost evil-like. I couldn’t help but laugh as well because it was so funny, and I was literally giddy that it was working so well! Through the first half of the ride there his mom kept talking to me. I didn’t mind because I really didn’t know what to talk about. So I let her go on and responded when needed. At one point, though, she had a work call so mostly all you heard the rest of the way was her talking on the phone, and my occasional buzzing of my phone every time he texted me. I giggled every now and then too because I had told him I had a surprise for him, but wouldn’t say what it was. So almost every other text was asking what the surprise was. It was so cute it was hilarious, I thought. When we got to his house we stayed outside for a few minutes to let his mom finish the work call. I tried not to laugh to what she was saying to her co-worker. “Ok, well I have to go because I have my son’s girlfriend with me, and he doesn’t know she’s coming. So I wanna see his reaction.” She smiled. I stifled a laugh, especially when I heard a muffled laugh on the phone. After she hung up, she turned around to look at me. “Alright stay behind me and be sure to be quiet. He won’t see you right away ‘cause he’s in the living room.” She giggled. She seemed more giddy about this than I was! She opened the front door and stepped over one of those mini dog wall things. Then I did the same and tried hard not to make a sound. “Hey Dan?” “Yeah?” Oh-my-god it was his voice! Ok, I know, maybe freaking out too much but I only get to see him on the weekends so of course I’d be excited. His voice was soothing to me. A little bit of deepness with the tiniest hint of huskiness to it. He insists he messed it up (well he uses another word instead of messed. Can probably guess what it is) from when he used to sing in his band (awesome I know right?) but I think it sounded just fine. I had to keep telling him over and over again that I liked it too, (anyways back to their conversation and stop with my weird mind crap). “I forgot to bring your food, but I did bring you something you love even more.” I stifled another laugh. “Okay?” he said confused. I followed his mom into the kitchen and saw him laying down on the sofa with his back to me. He was of course playing Call of Duty on his Xbox (not sure which one though). “Danyl, surprise!” I blurted out when I was almost to the sofa. He quickly sat up and swerved around. I swear his eyes almost jumped right out of his head. I tried to take one good look at him before I sat down. He wasn’t wearing his glasses but I thought he was hot either way. My friends agreed too. His shoulder-length, black hair with bangs was a little tousled, but I found that cute. Last, but not least, he was wearing a gray shirt and dark blue pajama pants. “Awesome!” he said seeming to be honestly surprised. He tried getting up to give me a hug but I pushed him back down on the sofa, and gave him an awkward hug while sitting. “While you two start making out, I’m gonna go out and actually get you something to eat.” His mom interrupted. We pulled away quickly and he blushed while I giggled. He went back to playing his game to try and hide it, but I saw it. I always do. After his mom left, Danyl paused the game again and swiveled around to give me an unexpected kiss. “Whoa,” I said breathlessly, “that was un-expected.” I giggled. All he did was gave me that heart-warming smile that he has. “So,” I tried not to stutter, “were you surprised?” I asked. He kept on smiling then finally answered, “Yeah, I was.” “Really?” “Yes really,” he smiled even more. “Are you sure because I know you weren’t feeling good and..” he cut me off mid-sentence by kissing me again. When he pulled back he said, “Crystal that was the best surprise ever. I definitely wasn’t expecting that.” His smile grew which melted my heart even more. “Well I’m glad you were surprised. It almost didn’t work out at first,” I mumbled towards the end. He frowned. “Why?” “Oh, well at first what happened was as soon as I got on my bus I texted your mom asking if I could come over, even though it was such short notice. And I asked her to keep it a secret. Your mom had said it was ok just one of my parents would have to drop me off and pick me back up. So, I quickly texted my dad if I could. He said not tonight but maybe some other night. When I told your mom I was really excited with her reply. She said she would go ahead and get off work early, come get me, and would be able to drop me back off. And, well, here I am!” “That’s just awesome!” He seemed truly happy. “Haha, yeah I guess so,” I started to get shy for some reason. Then I heard an “Awwww!” and he suddenly hugged me. Oh god I was blushing. I could by two reasons. One, I got really warm before he hugged me, and two he always does that when I blush. When he got done hugging he didn’t let go. Instead he pulled my close to him and had his arms wrapped around me. Then he went back to playing his game. I didn’t mind though because I loved being in his arms. It was the only time I ever felt truly safe. I leaned into his side and rested my head on his shoulder. I felt pressure again my head. Which I knew he was resting his head on top of mine. I couldn’t help but sigh happily. I felt him giggle next to me. I think I had a jumbo smile on my face which made me blush at the thought of that. Ok, I’m pretty sure I did ‘cause I felt him giggle even more. I closed my eyes and thought about how perfectly this had gone in the end… © 2010 Bailey TaintedAngelAuthor's Note
