Southern Summer Nights

Southern Summer Nights

A Poem by Midnight Shadow
"

A love poem that I wrote as an homage to the eternal high school romantic that I once was, and a series of poems that I penned back then.

"

Southern summer nights
So calm and wet with rain.
Two young lovers met
During a whispered refrain.
A night when poets wept
And the choirs of angels sang.
As these two young lovers
Sparked a flame.

A kiss falls gently
From her lips
And dances off
Her fingertips.
As time takes pause
And angels skip
Across the love
Within her grips.

As gestures find their
Wanton fare.
Entrancing them
Beyond the stare.
Where loneliness
No longer bares
Resemblance to
The love you share.

Southern summer nights
So calm and wet with rain.
Destiny deals a different hand
Nothing stays the same.

Soliloquies and
Sonnet’s fare.
Moving in the
Cool night air.
To find the lovers
Standing there
Losing the flame
They used to share.

Time picks back up
And marches on
As the lovers sing
A fading song.
The gestures passed
The angels gone.
The wind blows cold
And the world moves on.

Southern summer nights
So calm and wet with rain.
Promises get broken
Spoken once in vain.

A tear falls gently
From her eye
As she turns sadly
To say good-bye.
Two lovers lost
Not knowing why.
The angels whisper
And then they cry.

He falls roughly
Holding regret.
For the flame he never
Meant to forget.
Calling out
Through the tears wept
Knowing reality
To be the threat.

Southern summer nights
So calm and wet with rain.
Love cast us in shackles
And drives us insane.

Soliloquies and
Sonnet’s fare
Holding in
The lover’s stare.
A piercing gaze
Becomes a glare.
As she moves on
Leaving him there.

Time slows down
Night can’t hold on
As the lover’s tears
Wash in the dawn.
Lost in the silence
Once thought gone
The flame burns cold
But it’s will is strong.

Southern summer nights
Ending in a sad refrain.
Destiny told us in the start
Everything must change.

A cry explodes
And leaves his lips
As the angels watch
Him lose his grips.
On the love he held
That he now feels slip
Just beyond his
Outstretched fingertips.

But the gestures reach
Their wanton fare.
Her exit stops,
She returns his stare.
Her tears match his
As they both share
Desire’s touch,
It holds them there.

Southern summer nights
Bowing over to the day.
Love can’t always be strong
A lesson learned along the way.
Two young lovers paid the toll
And with their sad refrain
They found the strength, and the spark,
To re-ignite the flame!

Another lovely read from you. You manage to capture the feel of the past and make it feel as fresh as the present. I really like that you are able to write in such a way that it feels timeless. That adds to the wistful quality of this poem. Well done.
