Sorrowland

Sorrowland

A Poem by Lauren Jones
"

a poem about opening yourself up to love and friendship

"

Before you my world was dark

Seeing nothing but hearing every remark.

As if I were dangling above an endless pit

I felt my destiny had long been writ

Like a tragic Shakespearean play,

My fatal lines I would say.

I prayed that the plot would change

But it seemed God was out of range.

But he sent me an angel in disguise

Who pulled the blindfold off of my eyes.

The world was not as I had thought

And with my sight, the truth I sought.

I saw the blind leading the blind;

The starving wept while the corpulent dined.

The deaf call out but none can hear

Their voices filled with so much fear.

Now that I see, where do I go?

I fear it’s an answer I do not know.

My angel leads me by the hand

and steers me out of Sorrowland.

I bring the others into the light,

The mute gain voice, the blind gain sight.

My angel talks but not a word he speaks

“All is made known to the one who seeks.

Open your heart and you shall know

Who is friend and who is foe.

Look to others when you are lost

For mistrust comes with too great a cost.”
