A Farewell to Summer

A Farewell to Summer

A Poem by Lost in Wonderland

There was a bird that whispered to me,

His voice soft and lithe,

Begging, pleading, “Come dance with me”

Well who was I to deny?

I twirled and laughed while he sang his song,

A chorus of chirps and tweets.

Until a cool breeze carried him along,

Bidding me goodbye ‘til spring.

I looked around, seeing the world anew:

Leaves raining orange and red,

Grey clouds smothering the sky so blue,

Flowers drooping their weary heads.

A chill races through my fingers and toes,

The sun begins to hide.

Now what can I do but sigh and moan,

While I wait for summertime.

Smiled at the sweetness of the dance, then felt the cold begin to sweep over the landscape... yes... the winter comes in shadows and shades, but let your mind every linger on the whispers of the spring birds... :)

This is definitely going into my favorites. The whisper of the bird's pleading invokes the idea of a spiritual uplifting such weather in summer can bring. The bird represents the bliss and harmony of what has transpired and is not to be forgotten.

The descriptions in the last two stanzas are spot on. The coming of
another winter must be endured until once again the bird welcomes the speaker back with his rapturous melodies. You did a great job on this.

Very lyrical and poetic. Wonderful poem and thanks for sharing. At least fall brings cooler temperatures...and nanowrimo. ^_^
