What's Underneath the Doll's Face

What's Underneath the Doll's Face

A Poem by Lost in Wonderland

Cold hearted stares

Keep me quiet and smiling

While deep down inside

I am silently dying

Enveloped in a spider web of lies

Trying to please them

With countless "I'm fines"

Because I hate the looks they give me

A mixture of judgment and pity

They see me as a porcelain doll

Smile incapable of fading

Painted on for all the world to see

My cracks are subtle

I keep them well hidden

From condescending gazes

Beauty and circus tricks

Are perceived by the eyes

And ears can only hear my pretty lies

It is the heart alone

That is able to know the truth

Of all I dare not say

But it must be able to decipher

My abstract art every day

And thus determines

Those who are happy being deceived

And those, like I,

Who aren't afraid to dive

Into the deep

WoW this was lovely.
For some reason I really loved the second stanza. It just seemed so defiant and resolved: "Because I hate the looks they give me."

Very well-written poem. You were able to portray your emotions clearly amidst beautiful imagery. The porcelain doll metaphor worked extremely well here as well.

Always a pleasure.

Thank you Cole

people have a tendency of doing that, breaking us down to see if we'll get back up. pushing us around to see if we'll throw a punch, mocking us, ridiculing us, to see if we'll start crying. this is why they piss me off so much, bullies. i dealt with that enough as a child, became stronger for it, now, even though i look fragile cause i don't have the outer body or physique required, i have the cold hard stare of a man without mercy or remorse for those who try to harm me. get on my good side, everything's good, get on my bad side, run and hide.

Really enjoyed this poem. You did a great job conveying your emotions, and setting a scene full of imagery. As I read, I pictured a girl who stood on stage trying to act out a scene, yet filled with secret sorrows, her emotions grappled with her thoughts. There is definitely a beautiful disparity in that image (then again, it may just be my overactive imagination coming up with that). I think a great title would be my former words "Secret Sorrows", for they described what thoughts surfaced in me after reading this piece. Great job, looking forward to reading some more of your work.
