The Scales Are Wrong

The Scales Are Wrong

A Poem by Mick Burke
"

Anorexic denial

"

The scales are wrong!

                                                                  I weigh more than that.

I looked in the mirror, I'm ugly and fat.

My friends are wrong!

                                                             They say I'm too thin.

I sneak off on my own, put my lunch in the bin.

The doctors are wrong!

                                                               They say I need food.

I'll never get slim with that attitude.

My parents are wrong!

                                                                  They say that I'm dying.

My father looks broken, my mother is crying.

The scales are wrong!

                                                                 I weigh more than that.

I looked in the mirror, I'm ugly and fat.

Thank you.
I know what she means (I assume it's a "she"). A poor self image is poison.

It's a "she" in my head too Marie, but it doesn't have to be. Thanks for reading.
My favourite singer Karen Carpenter. Such a waste.
The mind really does what it wants - disbelieving everything in front of it. Truly a sad state of affairs. Very well written Mick - so many in the family affected when this attacks one it attacks all.

Thanks Anti. Denial can be incredibly strong, even when faced with seemingly undeniable facts.
touching stuff...but delivered perfectly

Thanks Dr.
This poem made me cold! I work with young girls and there is just nothing you can say to make them believe in their beauty. Sad society we live in.

Enjoy your writing, thanks for sharing

Amazing
Only i do believe all scales are wrong
Not just those we use to weigh our body

Call me Crazy
But all human man made scales to measure anything ..... well they are wrong

I guess that is why god gave us internal scales ..... telling us no that cant be right

I love this poem

Hefty stuff. Really Rhyme scheme is perfect and the poem is in an aesthetically pleasing shape. Really appreciate you drawing attention to such a huge problem. Kudos.
