ParenthoodA Poem by Mick BurkeThe ups and downs of being a parentYou worry about them when they go out, because you know there's so much to worry about, So still you fret and worry some more, And that doesn't ease 'til they walk in the door. You worry about them when they're in school, Because you know from experience kids can be cruel, And only a parent will understand fully, The hatred you feel for a ten year old bully.
Then there's the cost, not just a few cents, You never thought kids could be such an expense. They look for new gadgets and all the new fads, X-boxes, Wii consoles and Apple Ipads. And that's just the fun, frivolous stuff, With clothing and food you've never enough. Your financial position sends you into a rage, When you've way too much month at the end of your wage.
So why do you live with this endless frustration? Do you wish you could change the whole situation? But that's the conundrum you live with each day, You can't contemplate living a different way. You'll fight and you'll argue, you'll scream and you'll shout, That's part of what being a parent's about. But you'll also have good times and days filled with fun, Laughter, excitement, holidays in the sun.
'Cos when your child's tried, they don't have to come first, You're so filled with pride you think you will burst. You watch them grow up and deal with life's woes, Making new friends and also some foes. You try to help them as much as you're able, And remind them there'll always be room at your table. And when finally they've grown and leave you alone, You hope they'll be lucky and have kids of their own. © 2015 Mick Burke |
