The Aching Silence

The Aching Silence

A Poem by Ayana Abraham
"

I wrote this poem for a competition.

"

Cattle cars, filled with the innocent.

Jews, shipped off to a place unknown even to them.

And the world,

in complete silence.

They smell the burning human flesh as they arrive

and feel the biting cold through their thin, dirty uniforms.

And the world,

in complete silence.

Worked, starved, abused.

punished for a sin never committed.

And the world,

just watched in silence.

Jews, innocent people, now slaves.

Working for the people that brought them to that horrid place.

And the world,

just watched in silence.

Scarred and terrified.

Their humanity stripped from them for many years.

And the world,

just silent.

It hurt, it ached, but the world did not help.

They watched without a word.

But it finally ended.

The nightmare named Holocaust.

Author's Note

Ayana Abraham
I wrote this poem to show how much Jews suffered during the Holocaust. I wrote about what they were experiencing and how the world did not help. By making this poem very descriptive, I hope I could help people understand what the Jewish people went through. I hope that by understanding the mistakes we made in the past, we can create a better and brighter future.
