Midnight Addiction

Midnight Addiction

A Poem by Em
"

how did Icarus know when he flew too close to the sun?

"
i have become addicted
to the swooping
sinking
flying
falling
soaring
feeling of being in love

at first
the feelings were so big
and new
scary
exciting
tantalizing
breathtaking
that i was captured

and now
they still are those things
but i find
i need more
it is never enough for me

i have become addicted
to the joyful
incredible
terrible
feeling of being in love

and like all addicts
the withdrawal comes like a
punch to the gut
empty
falling
sinking
sobbing
crumpling
because

i have become addicted
to the feeling of being in love
the most freeing
confining
beautiful
terrible
feeling in the world
and i must just have a little more

oh how the withdrawals of this emotional drug we call love. They devastate the heart and can send the mind into utter madness. Make us do things we never imagined ourselves capable of doing. The euphoria is undeniable and addictive. It is why we as poets can't stop talking about it. And no matter how many words we use to try and describe it we always fall short. But it never stops us from describing its need and wants that define our hearts. Thank you Em for sharing your thoughtful truthful poem on this beguiling emotion we call love.

Romantic love can indeed be an addiction. Often the drug used to treat it is alcohol. But that's another can of worms.
