Island

Island

A Poem by ICU
"

A poem of self-evaluation

"

I've learned that I'm an island

I've learned to own my fate

I've learned no other holds the key

For what I love and hate.

I've learned to count my blessings

I've learned a lot of late

I've learned when chips are falling down

They sometimes miss the plate.

I've learned to know who's friend or foe

I've learned just who's me mate

I've learned who's there when needed most

It's me! My own worst fate!

Thanks for such an in-depth review, MMI. Basically, it means that when the chips are down, I really only have myself to rely on for my welfare, as we all do, but I don't always make the right decisions. In fact, I've had some truly monumental disasters! That's what the last line indicates.
Hope that explains it a little better. Poetic licence is fraught with elusive meanings, isn't it?

haha yes i'd have to agree with you about that :)
Such a great poem, ICU, really. The second stanza especially; it was very clever. Sends a message of solidarity. The last line throws me for a loop though: "Its me! my own worst fate!" To me, it was contrasting to the rest of the poem that seemed to re-enforce traits of complacency. Still great though. Just like your other write, it's refreshing in a good way.
