The world

The world

A Chapter by Howlsong

  • When a child is born in the world, an egg hatches (bird or dragon)
  • On the island a child is introduced to his or her dragon at the age of 5 years, a child of the mainland is introduced to his or her bird at the age of 4 years.
  • The children of the mainland are all trained for combat as the mainlands coast and the inland deserts are in constant battle over territory.
  • The island depends on the mainland for essential goods such as wool, coal, and basic foods. The mainland depends on the island for their exquisite treats, embroidery, literature, trinkets and most famous off all, their glassworks, as the people of the mainland have little or no time for such tedious arts.
  • Arranged marriages between the two peoples to bond the island and the mainland are common. Such an event is arranged by jeans parents.
  • Mainlanders use their birds in combat and even ship “battle-bird” armour in from the island.
  • Islanders use the plains of the mainland for flying classes as there are no open spaces to practice on the island. They can fly around over town, over the ocean, or over the forest but there are little places to land so lessons are held on the mainland.
  • At the age of 4 children are taught to read and write and taught the value of literature, storytelling and how to create a strong bond with their dragons, at the age of 7 they begin learning various trades, this training is put on hold at age 16 where they are old enough to learn to fly their dragons and all other means of education are put on hold for the duration of a year, after that year is over all other education is resumed until the students are ready to take up the trade they are best in. although, some children start flying earlier either taught by family or mischievously teaching themselves (flying without being taught by an experienced mentor is highly dangerous).
  • “Free-flying” is an extreme sport where the rider has no means of being attached to their dragon and runs over buildings or through trees (for those reckless enough to go into the forest), jumping to land on their dragons and jumping off their dragons before they have landed, even free-falling from great highs. This sport requires a great deal of trust between dragon and rider.
