Words

Words

A Poem by Mercedes Childers

It’s funny how they say words are like knives when really, they’re not.

They are two completely different things.

But what’s the main difference?

Words hurt MORE than knives.

I’d rather have someone hurt me by cutting me,

than yell hurtful comments towards me.

Cuts can go away.

They’ll heal up and they won’t hurt anymore.

Yeah, there will be a scar or two left behind,

but it doesn’t hurt as bad.

Stab wounds?

They heal too.

The blood will stop flowing out,

The pain numbs itself,

And the knife can be washed clean.

But words?

Words are everything.

Words have meaning.

They can enter your head,

But they never leave.

They keep you up all night,

And can stop you from being yourself.

They breach the skin,

Rip your heart in two,

And leave permanent scars that will never heal.

Permanent scars that will always reopen,

And memories that will never escape.

So do you get it now?

How words are not knives,

But WORSE than knives?

Knives can kill your body,

But words can kill you,

And you’ll never die.

I feel that after you read this, don't say that words are like knives ever again. However, it's a freedom-of-speech thing, so do as you please, for this is only my point-of-view.

I think the last verse is unnecessary. You made your "point" for both both knives and words. I always favor the personal takeaway after a read and not the directed one.

You are right. My Grandfather told me often. Never good to say. Say nothing. Words and bad actions can cause permanent separation. You are correct. A knife wound hell, hateful and negative words can break our heart. Thank you Mercedes for sharing your amazing words and thoughts.

I never said that before
Words are powerful , they can hurt deeply but they also can express love in a beautiful way
