New Year

A Poem by Meraki

I never understood
Why January 1st was celebrated
Turn on the TV
Flip the channel to the one where the ball drops.

I know, I know
People sing, dance, and smile
Braving winter's chill
Ah, now that's a sight to see

The place is packed
Bottles of champagne and confetti
At the ready
Soldiers man your stations
The countdown begins!

And then in the explosions of excitement
Fireworks and champagne fountains
The many kisses shared
The hugs of congratulations
And wishes for a great year

It's celebrating life
And being able to survive..

Then I thought
What if this were to end?
