The Face I've Never Seen

The Face I've Never Seen

A Poem by Darby Rae

Who knew that one day,

I would be standing here in this place.

Looking at your name,

the last as same as mine.

As the girl who had never seen you,

And yet still feels loss and grief, at the sight of your name.

They tell me stories,

About your glory days.

How you had a crave for adventure

That could never be tamed.

They described your daring smile

And your tough luck face

with blue eyes full of courage and faith.

The reports I've written for school

Have always highlighted you

 and your roustabout ways.

The Soldier In My Family” was always honored with your name.

I have always wanted to meet you.

And see the look on your face.

When you see how much I look like my mother

And even something like you.

They say I have the same blue eyes.

And your courage, in my own ways.

They tell me we are both strong,

In ways words cant describe

But you must have been much stronger,

I could never do the things you did.

I sometimes wonder

If you would have liked me.

If we would have ever,

Been friends?

If when I was young

Would you hoist me up high?

Carry me on your shoulders

Until I felt like I could touch the sky?

Would you have taught me how to ride my first bike?

Showing me how to sit upright,

And pedal at the same time?

Would you show me the land, sea and sky?

Describing the places you've been

When you once soared like a bird.

Would we enjoy long walks together, over the grassy hillsides,

Of the farming town you used to live by?

Would I call you my hero, the man I could look up to?

I think I would.

But we will never know

Just what we could have had.

You’re only a name to me here,

That’s all you’ve ever been.

Now I’m standing here

Looking at your name.

Carved deep into black stone.

Among your comrades

Your friends

Your brothers.

You are never alone,

You’ll always be there.

Molded into stone,

With a thousand other different names.

The only thing I can do now,

Is trace your name

And tuck it away.

Lay some flowers.

And go on my way.

 Rest in peace Uncle Thomas

Nice poem. Sad and sweet. I think that this is the way that most people feel about relatives that they never got to know. There is a strange feeling you get when people tell you that you look so much like so and so and you don't really know how to feel about being that living reminder. So I think that you did a great job portraying that emotion and the thoughts that one would wonder.

There are some places where your writing gets a little awkward or redundant. I suggest reading through it out loud and thinking about the way that it sounds. The content is very strong, but there are some places that the words that you used could have been more powerful. Just something to think about though, because your message is strong and fairly well put. good job!
