Little Life of Mine

Little Life of Mine

A Poem by Melissa Lynn Keeling

Oh little girl I know you so well,
your whole life is my story I lived to tell
I know your thoughts and dreams,
I know your life as it rips at the seams
Once I was you so young and fair,
I tell you my stories yet you don't care
The struggles the lessons that got me here,
I tell you to save you cause I love you my dear
Lost unloved lonely life was for me,
so hard was my life but for you I succeed
With eyes so trusting plump little cheeks like mine,
was once the only kindness in life I could find
For this for you I lived such a tale,
of a hell all alone I'd dare not fail
Tiny little hand in mine we walked the fires,
making sure you burn not by the long list of liars
Holding not scolding I protected you each day,
showed you a mothers love in every single way
Through the years I shared all the evils around,
told you how to live life safe and sound
My mistakes were many and options few,
all alone in the world I had to raise you
Such hope and dreams a life of ease,
for you my daughter I prayed God please
Yet here we are your age twas once mine,
as you hold tiny fingers little eyes that shine
Listen and heed my word you fought,
every chance I gave you that I had not
So now this life so precious and new,
you hold protect just like I did you
It is a hard life's road you'll find,
the choices you make so similar to mine
Hurts you'll face are coming I fear,
I warned you! I told you! Why did not hear!
The troubles that come you will still never see,
how lonely and hard of a life it can be
For alone you are not Nothing I won't do,
now not only for you but times two

This was great. In the beginning I actually thought you were talking about yourself in the poem, as though talking to your own younger self. But as it went on I realized it was the daughter you were talking about. To be honest though I think that really adds to the poem even if you didn't intend it. It shows the comparison between the mother and daughter. My only suggestion would be in the line "With eyes so trusting plump little cheeks like mine" to remove "like mine" because I think the audience already realizes the comparison and I felt it threw off the line just a little bit.

Anyway, great work!

I as well thought it was a dialog with the younger self but at the end, it was uncovered. The poem has a smooth flow, the experienced mother telling her daughter words of wisdom is so lovely and so touching.

i felt the same as theWynnedow...at first maybe the speaker talking about her younger self...but instead i found a parent wanting the child to have a better shot at life than she had...a smoother ride...
a heartfelt, expressive write.
