The Girl Who Didn't Like School

The Girl Who Didn't Like School

A Poem by Melissa Kesead

Her name was MaryAnne

And she thought she was cool

She didn’t like sports

And she didn’t like school

She thought books were dumb

And science was for nerds

That playgrounds were for babies

And art class for the birds

She never paid attention

Her homework wasn’t done

She played video games

Until the setting of the sun

No one could persuade her

Everyone had tried

She didn’t pay attention

Then her pet goldfish died

She couldn’t read the label

She’d fed him too much food

It was a rude awakening

Abrupt and rather crude

MaryAnne cried a bit

Sitting on her stool

Then dried her eyes, smiled

Got up and went to school

Very good! I disagree with other comments that the goldfish part was out of place. The goldfish part is the entire point of the poem, I would suggest. The whole point is that MaryAnne hated school so much that she could not read very well and as a consequence over-fed her fish because she could not read the label. The poem shows the consequence of a lack of education, and as such the goldfish is central to that. More to the point, MaryAnne realises after her fish's death that her inability to read was to blame and she goes back to school. Overall, this is a well written poem with a good message. What more could one ask for!?

Uh, I think the goldfish was just the right pet to complete the object lesson. If she had killed her puppy or a pony or, God forbid, a cow you would have lots of unhappy kids reading this and PETA protestors all over your front lawn.

I like the flow of this poem, it's rather nice. Though the bit about the goldfish was kind of random, though I see how it would be related to the subject of school.

Personally, I think that in this stanza:
No one could persuade her
Everyone had tried
She didn't pay attention
Then her pet goldfish died

You kind of upset the flow with the goldfish bit. I'm not going to recommend any way to change it, since it is your poem, but I do suggest looking over that part again.
