The Monkey and the Coconut

The Monkey and the Coconut

A Poem by Melissa Kesead

Way up high

In a coconut tree

Chattered a monkey

Almost constantly

He taunted and teased me

He jumped up and down

He ran on the trunk

From the top to the ground

So one day I chased him

Right up that old tree

I yelled at that monkey

To please let me be

I was mad at that monkey

My eyes had turned red

Then that chattering beast

Threw a nut at my head

A coconut’s large

And it hurt quite a bit

I had to get down on the ground

And just sit

The monkey came down

And he smiled up at me

Then he chattered away

And climbed back up the tree

I shook my head

And got to my feet

Chattered back at the monkey

And then ran down the street
