Jeremy Mouse

Jeremy Mouse

A Poem by Melissa Kesead

Upstairs and downstairs

and all through the house

scurried the adventurous

Jeremy Mouse

Through the wine cellar

and out through the trees

up to the attic

as quick as you please

The guard of the house

one Princess the cat

didn't much like the

small cousin of rat

She chased him through garden

through living room, den

she chased him down hallways

through alleys and glen

But Jeremy Mouse

was a clever young chap

he crept up on Princess

while taking a nap

"Listen fair kitty

I think we can deal

so you stay Queen Mouser

and I don't become a meal

I'll stay out of hallway

and attic and den

and to keep up your image

we'll fight now and then

We both can be happy

what do you say?"

Princess smartly agreed

and to this very day

both Princess and Jeremy

still frolick and play

When I found this group, I was thinking of stories for children, but your poem reminded me that children and even teens enjoy poetry, too -- especially if it is full of word play. Rhyme can sometimes call too much attention to itself, of course, and thereby sacrifice meaning to structure, but yours is as natural as can be. Thanks!

It looks like the group has not been very active for awhile, but I'll try to join and post my "kitty" poem, then see if anybody can help me with my children's story, The Curse of Qwerty.

Very amusing! The poem reminds me of Tom and Jerry and their wondrous episodes together.
