What happened to my green outfit?
To the flowery friend sleeping at my head?
I don't see children playing in the yard
Has everyone gone off straight to bed?
They say with time come winds of change
I now wear reds, oranges and yellow
No longer am I budding anew
But I'm becoming a more milder fellow.
Awakening this cool crisp day
I've realized shades of brown I've worn
My countenance is wrinkled and thin
Suddenly, I've become airborne.
A free falling leaf is what I am
There's one, two, three and four
Tumbling and twisting in the air
We giggle as we flip and soar.
As we each float to the ground
We ponder our dwindling fate
Love the leaves of autumn
Before it becomes too late.
Leaves of Autumn....giving a leaf the gift of thought...genius in itself....to me the story is realistic and insightful of what a leaf might think....very believable and fun to read! i shall listen more closely as the leaves fall about me; to the whispers they may utter in their last air moments before they kiss the ground....perhaps they shall speak to me after reading this introduction to the mind of leaves and enlighten my nature spirit!

I oiften get a sense of different entities attempting communication of a sort....not speaking, of course, but a type of communication close to telepathy....perhaps the Creator Himself using any living entity in such a way to draw me closer to the truth of life; the very life of all living things; and even things that we don't believe are living such as earth and rocks....but of course the Creator is Omnipresent and within every thing...
I enjoyed the poem dear friend.

I do like the fall. Cooler days and the change of color. Nature does teach us wisdom. All things must die and be born. Thank you Melissa for sharing the excellent poetry.

Loved this perspective a lot! Very unique vision to autumn and leaves; giving them human characteristics which made the imagery really fun to read and experience throughout the entire piece...Thank you for sharing.

Thank you for reading and commenting, LaShaye! I really appreciate it!
Interesting take on autumn, to write from the point of view of a falling leaf! I always find autumn beautiful but sad, as everything dies before the winter. I guess the last couple of lines could also be a metaphor for life - appreciate what you have, as nothing lasts for ever. Nice use of rhyme, and easy to read. Thanks for sharing this!

I didn't know if anyone would get that. Autumn is probably my favorite season. I live in Fort Worth, Texas and it has been hot, hot, hot. I am ready for the cooler weather!

We were kind of still waiting for summer to happen, when autumn arrived early in August, so now we can feel the chill of winter approaching, and it feels like we've been cheated! :(

Actually, today it is cooler and will be for the weekend but next week we will be back up into the 90s. Usually, for us, it doesn't start to cool off until around Halloween or so.
